If they had a "celebration" in 2018 to mark the end of the war you would probably be on saying that it was a disgrace. It is not a celebration it is a commemoration of a terrible time in the history of our country when millions of men died from both sides and this is a way of keeping it in the minds of people.Maybe a poppy on the coin would have been a better choice.

I wouldn't. In the slightest, well... if it was treated as a celebration I probably would. It's a time in history that I think needs to be kept up as the number one example of the arrogance of nations and why non-violent co-operation between nations should always be held up - it was a monumental waste of life for petty reason. It should be remembered, it should be mourned, it should not be celebrated.

If they have a remembrance in 2018 I will be part of that. I disagree with the poppy but I agree that that would be a better idea. Kitchener was a man criticised for his brutality in his own time, never mind this time. He was criticised off of both the Prime Minister who ruled during World War 1 and Winston Churchill, who was Prime Minister during World War 2.

For me it's nothing short of jingoism, but people need to keep in mind the actual events that happened and remember why it should never be allowed to happen again.

Lord Kitchener was an * and shouldn't be on any coin. And if the coin is to remember the fallen of WW1 then its focus shouldn't be on the marketing drive to get people to volunteer to die.

That said, it is lame that people are clambering to scream "offence". It isn't shocking and really not all that controversial either. It is just the incorrect symbol to have on a coin as the people who decided this probably do not have a great grasp of history.

I don't see anyone claiming offence, and the only time the controversy word has been mentioned is in the thread title other than that we have the exact same opinion.

Anybody not in favour of this image is automatically given the label "offended" by those who are in favour of the image.

I honestly don't give a flying * what is printed on any coin or paper I use to hand over. It means the absolute total of zero to me.

I'm happier to have the opportunity to have them in my possession than worry about the carvings on them.

Indeed. It seems they are offended that anyone would object.

    Couldn't agree more.

You've been as offended with the first part of your post as anyone else on this thread.
