And no this isn't about ethnic identity. :icon_mrgreen:

Are you a whiskey or a whisky person? Do you prefer a Bells or an Ardbeg? A Jamesons or a Powers? Blended or single malt? The lighter flavour of Ireland or the heavy peaty flavours of Islay?

Bushmills will do me any day of the week.

Edit: I suppose if anyone likes some of the nasty stuff produced in America or Canada then they can chip in. Although they will be laughed at. Verily I say!

Edit 2: Courtesy of Hairytoes so I appear like less of an idiot.

Speyside whisky isn't heavy or peaty mate - if you want those go to Islay.

Japanese whisky is very highly thought of.

I go for whatever I'm in the mood for & don't get caught up in the Nationality, my old man is really bad for this & therefore misses out on so many great whiskies - cos they're NOT Scottish... mind you he has a * excellent selection of Scottish malts.

    Never really drank whiskey.

A bad experience when I was 12 maybe is the reason I don't drink whiskey.

I've not drank any Scotch single malts, hence why I made a bit of an * of myself there in that post. :56:

I would be interested in trying a Japanese one.

I agree that one shouldn't get hung up on nationality beside some teasing for our American cousins.

For some time it was believed by many that whisky made in the Scottish style, but not produced in Scotland, could not possibly measure up to the standards of the traditional Scotch Whisky distilleries. Until fairly recently, the market for Japanese whiskies was almost entirely domestic, though in recent years there have been some exports, particularly to the United States.
Since the 2000s, however, some Japanese whiskies have won awards, including top honors, in international competitions, notably Suntory.[1][2] At the 2003 International Spirits Challenge, Suntory Yamazaki won a gold medal, and Suntory whiskies continued to win gold medals every year through 2013,[2] with all three malt whiskies winning a trophy (the top prize) in either 2012 (Yamazaki 18 years old and Hakushu 25 years old) or 2013 (Hibiki 21 years old), and Suntory itself winning distiller of the year in 2010, 2012, and 2013.[1]
Further, in recent years a number of blind tastings have been organized by Whisky Magazine, which have included Japanese single malts in the lineup, along with malts from distilleries considered to be among the best in Scotland. On more than one occasion, the results have had Japanese single malts (particularly those of Nikka's Yoichi and Suntory's Yamazaki) scoring higher than their Scottish counterparts.[3]
