Overspill, as Marie correctly pointed out. New towns were established to house those moved in the clearance programmes after the Second World War.

If you're interested in the social history of the Glasgow accent you should probably read up on Corby in Northamptonshire - large numbers of Glaswegians, other Scots, and Irish moved there when a steelworks was set up in the 1930s, changing the accent of the town.

The Corby accent is now generally accepted to sound Glaswegian (or at the very least heavily Glaswegian-influenced) even though Corby is in the East Midlands of England.

I met a fella from Corby once and I couldn't for the life of me work out where he was from - at times he sounded Scottish, other times Irish, other times Scouse. It's a fascinating accent.

Aswell as working beside Cumbernauld folk, I also have the privilege of working beside a few folk from Coatbridge. They put an 'r' in the word toilet, which is unbelievable but true. "I'm away to the Torlet".

That's exactly what Im saying aswell, its the same that way if you drive east to Banknock, they talk like me. But just a few miles west in Kilsyth they speak weegie. In Banknock though the Catholic kids go to highschool in Kilsyth while the Prods go to Denny high. So that might have something to do with it but its still weird how an accent can change in that short distance.

I met one down at Brentford, was a really nice guy.

Ive been there recently within the last few years, the Scottish thing is wearing out, more Poles there than anything but even weirder for me were * in England tops with the accent you describe.....thats plain * weird and simply WRONG!

It was about a hour later l discovered he was slagging the player about his "boots"

There's a few different words like that that they do.

They call a stank a drainer. That one actually caused a full scale rammy back in the day :56:
