I've always been puzzled as to why folk from Cumbernauld speak with a Glaswegian twang. I live in Falkirk area, all my family are from Bonnybridge which is only about 4 miles from Cumbernauld. Everyone from Bonnybridge speaks with a Falkirk accent, then you drive through Castlecary and as soon as you hit Cumbernauld they talk with a Glaswegian/Lanarkshire accent which doesn't make sense. I think they just want to be weegies. Theres a few folk at my work from Cumbernauld, and they say things like "Im away intae the toon this Saturday". So natuarally you think this 'toon' would be Cumbernauld because when people from Falkirk refer to the 'toon', they mean they're away into Falkirk. But no, apparently this means they are going to Glasgow. Why do they call it the toon when it's at least 25 miles from where they live? I think they just want to be weegies. My old granda says they didn't used to speak like that until they built the motorway. What yous think???

Cumberland was a new town that would have had a large influx of Glaswiegans due to overspilling in Glasgow.

Dumbarton and the surrounding area had.schemes built to cope with the lack of housing in Glasgow

Cumbernauld is actually just under 14 miles from Glasgow. Cumbernauld is also 12 miles away from Falkirk. I stay in Lennoxtown which is 10 miles away and I have a Glaswegian accent.

    You are extremely misinformed :smiley-laughing002:

Was it not to do with the whole Thatcher-era when she was telling people to "get on their bike" and travel to get work or something?

I think that led to all these "new towns" being develop to house travelling Glaswegians.

I hate when people like 25 miles from Glasgow say they live 'just outside Glasgow',it's not,we have our own sovereignty.

East Kilbride comes under the same category, even the kids that have no family or influence from Glasgow.

Like Cumbernauld, East Kilbride is a * place to live.

Well in that case if you compare people's accents from Bonnybridge or Castlecary with folk from Cumbernauld, there is still a massive difference and they are a lot closer. I seriously think they just want to be weegies. I mean people from Motherwell, Coatbridge, Hamilton etc, you can understand them talking with a weegie accent cause they're dotted around the east and south side of Glasgow but no Cumbernauld its far too East.

Aren't Motherwell and Cumbernauld the same distance away from Glasgow?

Because Cumbernauld is a Glasgow over-spill. That was/is its purpose. And it's 13 miles dude. Yer Granddad is maybe talking about the old Cumbernauld village which has been there for centuries and is on the Falkirk/Stirling side. However, the other 90% of the town was planned in the 50s for people coming from the Gorbals, etc so people from Cumbernauld have always been linked to Glasgow.

But you're no actually from Falkirk are you? You're one of they stinking Carbrainers, I can tell! :bbpd:

Aye I know some folk from Cumbernauld, one has a pretty bammy hun accent. (as he is a bammy hun).

One that gets me is Killie. Managers in my work are form Killie and they will have sort of Glasgow accents but say words like; seven, eleven, finish, but say them ;seeven, eleeven, feenish...then say Ken. Funny, but can be annoying.

Cumbernauld pre-dates Thatcher by some time. It was basically for the old Glasgow tenements being pulled down. It was envisaged in the mid-50s and built mostly in the late 50s, early 60s....and yes, it's a shitehole!

Accent's are absolutely * up. I'm from Kirky but I can drive literally 3 miles up the Kilsyth Road and every * talks like a * chookter :56:Why does it just stop there and not travel another 3 miles?
