Was actually thinking about that scenario myself whether to ask it or not I didn't know to :smiley-laughing002:
See that's the thing it could be classed as suicide but then again he never intentionally killed himself but the aim was more to save the kid but there could be an argument made either way

I think that as well; I think everything comes down to intent in the end up. Rather than if something is selfish or not.

    Exactly.

Which comes to our point that not all things termed "selfish" are negative.

    Exactly :50:

The man intentionally put his life at risk (to save a wean).

Thing is, yer man had 7 weans, a wife, a mortgage and was the sole earner of the family.

There was a programme about suicide i watched many years ago. It went through suicide from the side of the person - examined their mental states, motives etc. Then it went through it from the perspective of their family, loved ones and friends.

The most saddening parts about the film were the facts that these people (attemptees) were * bent on doing themselves in regardless of the fact they have kids, husbands, parents etc. They are so disturbed beyond thinking about anything other than ending it.
The other disturbing part was when they played 911 calls made to the police by the people who find the suicides. I am man enough to admit i cried when a very young girl (6 or 7 iirc) found her brother after he had topped himself.
They do not think of the mess they are leaving behind, they do not think of the poor people who have to find them in whatever manner they choose to go. And some ways of topping yourself are not pretty in the slightest.
    That to me is selfish.

    Indeed,
Its the same as my feelings on Paddy McCourt.
I get mad because people cant see the brillent natural ability of this man.
And that could be deemed a act of selfishness.

That's the way I tend to find think of it. The people who do it tend to be genuinely mentally ill and it's a * shame for them. It's a chemical imbalance in their heads making them act like this but at the end of the day I feel more sorry for the likes of that 7 year old lassie.

    Good post.

This reminds me of watching a program about Gary Speed.

Think it was his wife that walked in to the room and found him hanging from the ceiling.

That image will NEVER leave her memory.

Now that suicide was a massive shock to the whole country.
A person you assumed had everything in life and had so much more to do.
It showed that suicidal depression can hit even the most well-off or famous people.

And then imagine it was one of his children?

    Absolutely.

Such a shame, and such a waste of life - seemed like a great guy by all accounts.

Definitely mate, you wonder what she thinks of him now. Probably a mixture between love, pity, grief and sheer anger.

I dare say that the rest of her life will be an emotional continuum - bouncing between all of those feelings you mentioned.....and then some.

And also - think about this - the fact that nobody knew Speed was allegedly suffering from depression, do you not think that: his wife, his parents, his sister, his friends etc will all be blaming themselves indefinitely for not noticing that he was mentally ill?

Without doubt. It's the fall out of suicide that makes me label it selfish.

Everyone he knew would be scarred for life in some way. Particular those close to him. His children will grow up why their Dad would rather die than bring them up; it will leave deep mental scars.

When Speed's sister was interviewed on that bbc3 programme she mentioned that she wished she'd asked him if he was feeling OK. It's obviously something that drives them crazy wishing the had done something, but in reality it might not have made a difference. If she had asked him he might have lied and said everything was fine, who knows.
