He was getting past their players with ease for the majority of the time he was on the pitch

Because we like our full backs to get forward. That allows teams in behind, his positioning was good as was his tackling.

His tackle in the penalty area was different class.

 

Made an awful start but really grew into the game. That was the most I've seen Matthews attack in YEARS, and I welcome that. He has pace to burn and Santon is *.

 

There is a difference between going forward and getting caught out all game.

His crossing was poor also.

 

Except he wasn't caught out all game. They exposed our flanks because our full backs get forward, we either tell our fullbacks to reign it in and lose the width they provide or we allow them to do it.

You'll see them be a bit more consevitive in Italy I would think.

 

Some dodgy passing at times I felt, but overal decent game.

 

Surprised to see some comments. I thought it was the best game that Matthews has played for us in a good while. He showed some real composure in what I thought was the best worked goal of the game.

 

He got us back in game out of nothing didn't look as if there was anything on and great composure with the pass.

He was more than decent. And is written off far too much on here.

 

He and Izzy were caught out all game. I am all for attacking football but there a times when to go for it and when not. Particularly when you do not have someone with great speed in front of you for any sort of cover (GMS and Armstong are not at the same fitness as others yet).

If he was attacking so much I would have expected some decent crosses to come from it. The one time he left their fullback for dead (and I think that was after a 50/50) he made a difference - if you going to put us at such risk defensively we need to be creating x amount of chances to counter it.

Izzy was just as bad, Shaqiri was left alone far too often.

 

Yeah that ball for the goal was * man

 

That's down to Ronny though, you follow the instructions that the manager gives you. I thought his passing was good.

 

Thought he was pish.

 

Excellent tonight. As has been said, space was left in behind because of tactics, not because of a mistake on Matthews' part.

 

* the first 10. Brilliant the 80+ after that. Best performance from him in a while.

 

Fair enough suppose we seen it differently. I like him though, hope he does more of what got us the first goal.

 

I have said he done well for the first.

One cross does not mean you done well all game. When was his next decent ball in?

 

Adam never gives up! Great determination for the first goal!

 

He played well for half an hour, starting with the assist for the first goal. Other than that he was rotten.

He's just a very poor defender and his final ball is usually pish. Much like his mate at left back. We really need to sort out those positions.

 

Started slow but ended up having his best game for a long time.
