maybe just maybe neil told the players before the season started with no sevco that the priority was champions league and then thats the reason the results/performances before and after the champions league games were dire and lacklustre

maybe its as simple as neil lennon drove it home to the players this is all about champions league this year

and as a result the league performances became practically unimportant in the players minds

the thing is even if this is the reality of it and although gratefull for the champions league games/performances this season

the champions league performances this season although great just doesn't compensate for the terrible lacklustre football we have played domestically

the result of the terrible apathy driven poor football is that fans will stop being excited and stop coming to the football

Appreciate what we have. Managers capable of getting us to the CL last 16 are hard to find. Even Martin O'Neill couldn't manage it. Lennon has his faults yes but he is still a relatively inexperienced manager. He will learn from this and so will the players. I think we should maybe get some media relations expert to have a word with Lennon. Really needs to learn how to properly conduct himself as Celtic manager.

if we win the league by a point i dont care , at the start of the season when they get asked what is the priority for the season the management always say "winning the league" what they dont say is priority is winning the league by 30 points !!!!
I couldnt give a toss if we win by 1 point or 30 points as long as we are champions thats all that matters :50:

You make it sound like mon was a disaster in Europe, he made parkhead a fortress we had a good points total, oh and he took us all the way to a final what was the points total that year.

That year we didn't qualify for the Champions League.

Martin O'Neill still couldn't do it with far better players, that is a fact.

Spot on - I loved the time we had with MON, but we massively under-achieved in Europe (I don't care what people say - we were a laughing stock in Europe before, he gave us back our respect blah blah blah) fact is we had a cracking team and his European tactics were so naive it was unreal. :31:

No, they weren't. We didn't underachieve we are astonishingly unlucky. 3 times we finished with 9 points and some right dodgy decisions (Juve game anyone!?) * it up.

He wasn't naive, he was brilliant and he kickstarted Fortress Parkhead. He didn't get through to the last 16 but he was sensational in Europe for us.

It only sounds that way if you completely underestimate what Lenny has achieved this year.

No no it just sounds that way.
Lennys achievments in Europe was fantastic but points in the league have been poor that's what the thread is about.

Would you rather we got 90+ points but lost the league like in 2011? I wouldn't.

I think it comes down to objectives and expectations.

Had someone said to you at the start of the season that by the end of the season we would have got to the last 16 in europe, beaten barca, lost the league cup semi final, won the league by say 15 points, and will likely win the scottish cup final, would you take it? I would suggest every celtic fan would grab that without a seconds thought. This season has been odd, and at times quite frustrating, but it has also been one of our most successful. I just dont believe any celtic fan would have demanded more at the start of the season.

But I think people get greedy, and football fans are the worst. The quickly forget any progress made and instead focus on perceived negatives. They assume things should only ever get better and so suddenly a likely double and last 16 of europe is no longer good enough. They forget that before Lennon took charge we were getting beat 4-0 off St Mirren and we couldnt get out of a Europa group of Tel Aviv, Hamburg, and Rapid Wien. Now we are strolling to the league title and beating the likes of Barca, Benfica, and Spartak. But people still want more!

Sometimes we just need to detatach ourselves a bit and just admire the crazy amount of progress our team has made over the last few years. When you do that, winning the league by 15 points or 40 points really looks pretty insignificant.

Odd is definitely the word to use to describe this season.

The most bizarre season in my living memory anyway, sure the same can be said by plenty of others.
