Using the Gaelic version of your surname

Does anyone else do this?

In the last few years I have started using the Irish version of my surname for trivial things like Facebook so nobody can find me. But I have sometimes wondered if I used the original version of my surname in an exam just for the craic or could I be penalized for it?

Can't see why you would be penalised for it mate - it's the correct way.

 

I have always wanted to change it officially but it would be more hassle than it is worth. People find it difficult with the English spelling.

 

Putting it down differently on an exam might be a bit risky.
Seeing the different spelling might make them think it's not actually you :icon_mrgreen:

 

I never changed my officially but my passport is in Gaelic. I like you use my gealic version on web accounts, I encourage my children to change it officially when they are 16. It's a shame I didn't do it when I was younger as it would create to many problems now at my age.

 

Sorry to be blunt here, but * "people". You are perfectly entitled to change your name as long as you aren't doing so to commit any acts of fraud.

I would encourage anyone thinking of doing so to go ahead (change their name that is, not commit fraud )

Can someone tell me why some people's name in their Irish passports is written in Irish, and some other people use English variant of their name?
I suppose that the people from Gaeltachts and people whose mother tongue is Irish are those whose name is in Irish, but if someone whose mother tongue is English wants to have his name in Irish, do they have right to do that?
In Greek and Cypriot passports, names are written in Greek and transliterated to English, but I suppose it is because of the alphabet. I mean, all the world must learn Latin alphabet, but very small percent of people can read the Greek one.

Haha, my name on fb is written in Serbian and in brackets, it is written in Gaelic. Thank *, there is a Gaelic version of my name and surname. :icon_mrgreen:

 

Mac uidhir is my sir name in Gaelic it seems.

 

I used to do it all the time when I was in High School. It was always funny seeing teachers struggle with it (at least I thought!). I don't think there's any way they can mark you off for it. I never was at least.

I like the sound of my Gaelic name. It is Irish Gaelic mind since I have an Irish last name....here goes.: Criostoir O'Meallain. Or if it were Scots Gaelic Criostoir would become Crisdean

My surname in Irish is O'Maolmhiadhaigh do not even know how to pronounce it :smiley-laughing002: I have noticed on a quick google search the surname brings up the name Muldowney, I assure you it isn't.
