And now its time to raise the stakes. Thats the point. There comes a time when potential is not that big a selling point to us.

I am inclined to agree, its the same with doyle, simply not good enough.

Yet russell provides the pace we desperately need up front or as part of a 3, we really lack lightning pace.

what a load of nonsense. We have to sign players with potential, thats just the way the world works financially now. We aren't going to be buying proven champions league players cause we don't have the money. No one knows if Russell is good enough for the champions league but in our current financial situation we have to gamble on unproven quantities. Personally I think the gamble would pay off as he has all the elements that make a good champions league player.

Am I being really dim and misunderstanding people here or have some people actually been suggesting we should be more like Sevco when it comes to our signing policy?

For the record I wanted Russell, but if Lenny doesn't, I trust him.

but the question becomes can we really afford proven cl quality and I for one don't think we can. Players who have proven themselves in the cl cost quite a bit of money, which we really can't afford especially before we even know if we are going to be in the competition this season.

why are people blaming the board? It's Lenny who has the say. We asked to be kept in the loop, but I'm sure Lenny will have the final say. Maybe this has moved to fast and he has other players higher on the list.

Hopefully one of those other players is not to Kevin Doyle.

If we keep doing this then things will only go one way. Down. We simply cannot rely on getting it right all the time (which we've not done anyway) and our target market is the CL for the financial rewards. This season has put us in a position to look at a bit better quality than we have been doing. There has to be a balance and Lenny has already stated this.

Do we know for a fact that we haven't put in a bid and he's just accepted Derbys terms over ours?

Yes, Dundee United have confirmed that Celtic haven't put in a bid, and Lennon has confirmed that Celtic haven't made any move on Russell. So yeah he's joining derby.

I honestly think if Celtic had really wanted him, we would have got him. Lenny must have his eye on other strikers.

So in your opinion we should abandon the business model that hs made us successful? The only way forward for a club in our financial situation is to plow more money into youth development and scouting. You are going to be very disappointed if you are expecting us to spend the megabucks required to get proven champions league experience. Plus spending big doesn't in any way guarantee success, we've had a much better record in recent years when we bring players in on the cheap than when we spend big.

    * off that we didn't get him. Lots of uncertainty surrounding our strikers atm. Hooper is probably going, Stokes hasn't signed a new contract, Miku and Lassad are going, Lennon is apparently angry with Watt...

    Hearing that mate.

Not a fan of signing Doyle.

And as much as I'm gutted on what could be missing out on Russell.....we will have other targets and we will sign a couple of strikers.

Hopefully we have made the right decision choosing not to go for Russell, not so sure myself though. I think we will sign Balde along with another striker similar to Stokes and Hooper. As you say we will have other targets, I just have a feeling one of them is most definitely Doyle. The signs from Lennon seem to be that he really likes him as a player. * knows why going on his form since moving to Wolves.

I don't have evidence but Watt hinted at it in an interview not to long ago. Even if it's bullshit, which it probably is, Watt seems to be the only striker at the club who is guaranteed to be here next season
