Selling Club?

Discussion in 'Celtic Chat' started by hairytoes, Dec 31, 2012.

  1. Lets see our resolve in the Jan window, I think it'll be played out differently this season as only 15 other Clubs in Europe are with us in the CL - on other seasons, if we're not in the big cup we would find it harder to keep the wolves from the door.

Anyway, have we now sussed out the transfer market as a source of revenue? i.e. buy cheap relatively unknowns & sell for big money - Ki being the latest example.

We've had problems in the past with not making any good money on good players, Henke was an exception - worth more to us as our own player.

But we've let valuable players go too cheaply in the past, due to them running their contracts down - Naka & Boruc are 2 I can think of recently.

Now we have highly coveted players, who will get attracted to bigger Leagues (not the CL though, eh ). Lawell will have learned his lessons & as soon as it becomes apparent that a player won't sign an extension - I think he'll be punted, sooner rather than later.

Big Vic, Forster, Hoops: 2 of these guys are swithering on contract extensions - I wonder how long they'll be here & for how much money they will go for.
Kayal, Forrest, Watt & Mulgrew all recently signed extensions though, so I guess we can still sell ourselves to (some) these guys, as well as selling them to others.

yes we are a selling club, and there is no shame in that. Its just a fact of the economic football landscape.
We operate in a small league, with limited resources, so the only way to generate extra funds is a sucessful run in the Champions League or sell our best players on for a large fee.
I am delighted we are finally following the successful policy of Ajax and Porto. Just want to see more of our home grown players breaking thru each season to replace the "star players" being sold.

As long as we don't except less than there worth, as clubs from bigger leagues believe because we play in the spl that there worth is less even though they know the players worth is a lot more:47:
    No more !!

Every club is a selling club, but I agree with your point of view. Selling Ki was a great bit of business for the club, they also did the same to a smaller degree with Evander Sno. Bought for approximately 50k, sold for £1m. It's almost inevitable that one or two of our star players are going to want a new challenge at a different club at some point and if we receive a good enough offer, the club will sell.

The only concern I have is that I wouldn't put it past the plc to accept a bid of 8-10m for vic when he's clearly a minimum 15m+ player, if the plc dig their feet in, other clubs will get the message also - "to * off with insulting bids".

Only then will we have arrived at the Ajax & Porto models of maximising our potentials. The next few weeks and months will be very intresting.

Could an SPL club really command that kind of fee?

    Yes.

It's about time that we stop ourselves from being bullied because we play in Scotland :50:

I've yet to hear of a club who have never sold a player in their entire history.

The problem is we have to sell the players before they reach a certain point in their contract otherwise their value declines.

Personally I felt Ki was worth double what we got for him but due to him wanting to leave and only having 1.5 years left on his contract the board felt we had to cash in. We could have waited till this january and maybe we could have got more but there's always the chance clubs would have just waited till his contract ran down.

I think Wanyama is worth about £20m. You look at McGeady, Hutton and Gordon all went for about £10m when the selling club wasn't in as strong a finanical position as we are now.

yes, thankfully. Our league should be a shop window to the EPL, as should the Championship in england to The EPL. It will benefit the national team that most of the national team players are playing in the EPL and coming up against the calibre of players they are playing against week in weekout.
Its the same with the champions league. Our players will benefit from playing against Europes top teams regularly.
We should look to recieve the going rate for the players we are selling. The TV money even the relegation clubs recieve is around £40 million mark. They will pay accordingly to stave off relegation and stay in League.
Look at Porto, they set a figure and almost always get the buying team to pay it. we should be doing likewise. Lawwell is no fool.

Just because the amount of money clubs are willing to pay for a player is based on a few things, one of them being the quality of league he currently plays in.

Yes. Think he gets some incredibly unfair criticism on here at times. Remember he only turned 23 this season and is just becoming a senior player. Plus he was excellent at the Olympics and I really thought he was going to be brilliant for us this season.

    Coudos :50:

He was not a first team regular for us, and in fact was probably about 5th choice midfielder for us.

Getting £6m for him was daylight robbery.

What do you think are realistic figures, that we should receive for Wanyama and/or Hooper, if sold later this coming year.
