    We're a big team...?
    Where?
We're the biggest team in Scotland, but in European football we're not in the top 20.
We get our players from unfashionable English lower division clubs and if you put another team's name beside our European record over the last ten years, you'd be slagging them off as no-hopers.
We've been nothing to be scared of for thirty years.

While I appreciate we've not been a world class team since the 1970s, that sort of negativity isn't appreciated. Only 9 years ago did we reach a UEFA Cup Final and in the past 6 years we have reached the Last 16 of the Champions League twice and have a fair chance of doing so again. It's just great to be back where we belong, amongst the elite of Europe. :50:

Have a look at some of our results since 2000, then rephrase that.

    The UEFA cup final....
Aye - I thought that was marvellous - enjoyed every minute of it - went to as many home and away games as I could, but moved house the weekend of the final...
    To me it was great.
To the vast, vast majority of football teams and supporters in the world, it was the square root of * all.
Getting to the last 16 was great too, albeit slightly overshadowed by the animosity towards the manager, but twice...? For me, getting out of the group stage regularly - ie, more often than not - now that makes you a decent team. Getting out of the group stages twice in a decade isn't a wonderfully fantastic record.
I am delighted that we have made it through to the group stages, and I think that if we play how we can we might even nick second spot - but I don't think we are that big a team that we can pour scorn on our players for celebrating the chance to come up against class sides.

If I rephrased it based on those results it would sound a wee bit too negative...

Reaching the UEFA Cup final back in 2003 - Including beating Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield on the way - was very respectable 9 years ago. Reaching the Last 16 of the Champions League in consecutive seasons was also very respectable for a club on our budget. Infact just for the sake of it, here's a list of 25 good results Celtic have had in the past 11 years during European competition:

    Ajax 1-3 Celtic
    Celtic 4-3 Juventus
    Celtic 1-0 Porto
    Celtic 1-0 Valencia
Blackburn 0-2 Celtic (Top 6 EPL side at time)
    Celtic 3-1 Stuttgart
    Liverpool 0-2 Celtic
    Boavista 0-1 Celtic
    Celtic 0-0 Bayern Munich
    Celtic 2-0 Lyon
    Celtic 1-0 Barcelona
    Barcelona 0-0 Celtic
    Celtic 0-0 AC Milan
    Celtic 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk
    Barcelona 1-1 Celtic
    Celtic 1-0 Manchester United
    Celtic 3-0 Benfica
    Celtic 1-0 Benfica
    Celtic 2-1 Shakhar Donetsk
    Celtic 2-1 AC Milan
    Celtic 1-1 Manchester United
    Celtic 2-0 Villarreal
    Dynamo Moscow 0-2 Celtic
    Hamburg 0-0 Celtic
    Udinese 1-1 Celtic

I agree with your sentiment but your negativity is too far. :50:

There was no negativity intended at all. The post was in response to those who were posting about how we were such a huge team that it was embarrassing for our guys to be delighted to be in amongst it again.

And it wouldn't take much to post 25 results that were not so great I'm afraid...

Oh, and I appreciate your efforts btw...

I agree 100% with this! Why do some except us acting like a pub team? We show them too much respect before a ball is kicked!

yeah i agree with you , i dont want to see our players acting like non league players do when they get a tie at anfield. professional footballers for celtic , time to get back to where we belong and take it seriously...its no big deal for us getting drawn against barca...this will be the 7th or 8th competitive tie against them in the last ten years, we battered benfica last time we were in their group, and knocked out spartak recently too.
lets get down to business celtic.

I hate to say it but i agree with jack snakes. Its just being realistic. Ofcourse im still gonna be nervous before the games and praying we go through but our chances are slim. Times have changed very quickly, we're not the team we were 10 years ago. I think our aim will be 3rd to drop into the europa league. I just hope im wrong

Some folk are grumpy old *. This team, all young, alot younger than the 2000's when we reached finals etc. These guys all dream about champions league, watch barca, they all talk about messi.
They finally after a massive load of work reach the group stage, and get drawn against a team they have only dreamt about playing. They celebrate, well * good on them! If they feel that happy about it, they'll try so hard it'll actually shock us with how good they can play.
I can see this celtic team shocking a * of a lot of people in europe in the next few years. BRING THEM ON!!!

    Celtic 3-1 barca BOOOM!!!!!

what? so celebrating the draw makes us seem like amateurs??

most of the team is under 24 years old and have no big time experience, this is what this group of players have been working together to acheive for the past 2 years,to be crowned champions and to qualify for champions league, naturally they are going to be delighted to be playing against top european teams

did it occur to you ,maybe they would celebrate the fact that they avoided a much harder group? or maybe they celebrated because they beleive they can do something in this group?

some really harsh criticism for the team,it wasnt 2 weeks ago we were all unsure if we would qualify or not,now were supposed to be a big team in europe all of a sudden

The fact is most of our team are "non-league" players in the Champions League because they've never played beyond the qualifiers. How many of our fans were getting excited at the prospect of big teams coming here? But apparently the players - who actually get to play in the matches - can't get excited. * hypocrites.

I can't take you seriously as a Celtic supporter if you don't think those 25 results were impressive. Infact, I can't take you seriously as a football supporter.

I think you might want to ask Barca, Milan, Juve, Liverpool, Man U to name a few about that and see what they think.

edit. Should have read the rest of the thread before posting, seems Frank covered it better than I did :56:

This thread :56: Can't believe an argument has stemmed from this considering there was no reaction at all :56::56: Fair enough debate all you want if our players started celebrating, but they just sat almost motionless, so you're all fighting over something that didn't happen! What a waste of time.
