    One thing tonight did do for me was confirm my feeling that Mark Lawrenson should never, ever be allowed to commentate on football. Especially not for the BBC, a broadcaster respected the world over for the quality and impartiality in their broadcasting.

    absolutely delighted, a more than deserved win for italy, we dominated the match but just couldn't find a way through! always knew once it went to penalties that we'd win though!

    Pirlo was utterly sensational, as well as his dominant display during the match that penalty was just :notworthy

    Germany will be favorites to win the semi but hopefully the azzure can summon up the spirit of 2006 and get an improbable result!

    But he scored :56:. Taking him off for defoe would be silly, he's still the best striker England have even when he's not at his best. He had some great link up play with gerrard tonight and like I said you need to keep him on for penalties or he can produce that but of magic that the other strikes can't do.

    One thing i noticed about the 1st 50mins Welbeck was asked to do a job on Pirlo and done it well - This has been picked up by a top Italian reporter - And one last thing.Welbeck was outstanding in limiting Pirlo playing. withOut him,Pirlo could finally do whatever he wanted.This is the football.


    As i already posted on here and Rio has picked up on his twitter England needed a Park type player tonight to a job on him , Welbeck is not that type of player crazy to waste him like that.

    England could have used Phil Jones tonight only player who could have filled that role looking at the bench.

    Badly missed a Carrick , Barry , 2 centre mids ie Parker and Gerrard was never going to work v Italy 3 in the middle .

    Just back in. Fair play to Italy they outplayed us. In the first 25 mins i thought we played well, i also thought it was gonna be our night when they missed the penalty but so gutted when we lost but im proud of the lads that was probably the best defensive performance ive ever seen from england
    terry, Lescott and johnson were immense. So gutted but the best team won
