Steven Gerrard Question

Discussion in 'World Football' started by Mystic Penguin, Mar 14, 2012.

  1. Gerard was great about 5 or 6 years ago but he's a shadow of the player he was.

  2. I think he is past it now.

  3. I do think maybe 5-10 years ago he was one of the best central midfielders in the world but definitely not now. He is a good player technically but not enough for that to carry him at the top level without the physical side of his game which he has lost in the last few years. He's just not the same dynamic player he was a few years ago. Maybe if everything clicks at Liverpool and he adapts to the new style he'll be a top player in the future. But that would require him to be the English Xavi - I'm not sure he can do that.

  4. I was saying yesterday Liverpool should have sold him in 2010. They could have still got decent money to rebuild the team with and wouldn't be so over reliant on him. He's not the same player any more yet the team still looks like it relies on him the majority of the time.

  5. He's probably still the best of a bad bunch of English midfielders but not near the player he was 5-6 years ago.

  6. Mikel, Ramires, Diaby, Arteta and Rodwell are all quality midfielders?

You've listed a load of poorer midfielders from the other leagues. In Fact you've even listed centre mids that couldn't get a game in England and had to move :56:

  7. During Euro Gerrard set up three goals and showed his crossing is still great, despite not being as good as he once was overall.

Stats can be misleading, in this case it's just bullshit.

  8. Cazorla and Gerrard sum up the quality difference between Spain and England. Gerrard is a legend and in his prime England best player (probably just about still is) and Cazorla is only on the bench for Spain yet looks a class ahead of him.

I think Gerrard has always been overrated. I'd say top 30 at a push.... nah top 50.

  9. Ramires, Diaby, and Arteta are all quality midfielders. Not sure about the rest...

  10. Arteta who can get absolutely nowhere near Spains midfield.

  11. Yeah when you consider how poor Spanish midfielders are he should walk into their squad.

Although I do not consider him better than Gerrard.... although he was better than Gerrard yesterday.

  12. Yeah, you must be really poor to not be able to take Xavi/Iniesta/Alonso/Busquets/Cazorla/Silva/Mata/Navas and the rest places off them!

  13. When comparing the quality between the leagues then its quite stark, Arteta considered one of the best in England. In his own country he's never even been called up in the national team squad because of the depth of quality in Spain and that is just the Spanish midfielders and not the likes of Mesut Ozil or Kaka etc.

Although the English game is starting to get technically better with Cazorla, Kagawa, Hazard, Granero, Mata, Silva and the like pluing there trade there.

  14. Because that was the point I was making

  15. What point where you making?

  16. ^^^^

    that.

    Quality what, Sunderland class players?

Who are the poorer midfielders and who are the ones who had to leave England?

Do you honestly think there are better centre-mids in England than Spain and Italy :56::56::56::56::56: :52:
