sutton was a top player .. i'm not disputing that at all . People can call him a legend all they like .. thats their opinion .

I just think .. calling sutton a legend .. makes thommo . hartson .. balde .. petrov ..all legends too . Just doesnt look right to me . They were part of MON's era of players that served the club well and were all individually brilliant during his spell.

Legend status should be reserved to a player that was uniquely special imo - jimmy johnstone , paul mcstay , henrik larsson .

  4. Brilliant player.

We played him in attack, midfield and defence and he always put in a convincing performance. He was originally a defender at the start of his football career. I remember when we played the huns at Ibrox and he played as a centre-back and was absolutely rock solid.

I often remarked that we should have tried replacing Rab Douglas with him in goals as he could literally play anywhere. :56:

I understand how people may think he doesn't get enough recognition. From what I remember, he never really had a chant which properly caught on, did he? And, of course as previously mentioned, he played in the same team as Larsson who takes all of the plaudits.

I miss that Celtic team we had under Martin O'Neill. :frown:

i loved how he came back to england with celtic in the uefa cup .. scored a beauty of a header against blackburn , to get it right up those english journalists who slated him during his time at chelsea.

Best sutton goal though was the left peg volley against juventus .. champions league. What a * belter of a goal :)

Henrik Larsson wouldn't have been Henrik Larsson without Chris Sutton.

Wasn't his best position granted but he was good there and was used there as it could incorporate him Henrik and BBJ in the same team.

I don't know where you're coming from with the MON's last season statement as he started using him there in the Seville season (first time was at Ewood Park if my memory serves me right) and would have played there, at the expense of Paul Lambert, in the final had BBJ not been injured.

    thats a bold statement :56:

Of course Henrik larsson would've been the same player , regardless who he was paired up front with . He was a world class goalscorer . It just so happens he worked well with sutton and vice versa .

My favourite goal of his was against Juve. Thumping half-volley. Brilliant night in general.

only two pages to a fekin great great player who ended up being as much of a celtic fan as u and i ,but ill tell you wot ,i bet he was one of the first names on mon team sheet , and unfortunately had a name that was not conjucive to a great chant or a song dedicated to himself at the time ,* knows he deserved one .

a bit like wee strachan here ,you see how good they were for us when its gone .

I thought he was a great CM. He didn't just start playing there in MON's last season, (in fact he didn't play there that much that season), but featured there regularly the previous season behind Hartson and Larsson. He was outstanding that season, could easily have been POTY.

I agree with LisbonLion11 that the term legend is thrown about a bit too often. Larsson was a legend, but Sutton was very, very good indeed.

He was a great player and is a lovely guy too, but doesn't (for me) make legendary status I'm afraid.

Celtic legend, no doubts about it.

Aside of that, though, a brilliant and vasty under rated overall footballer. He would walk into the current England side, for example.

Legend in my eyes. Deserved a better ending to his Celtic career also.

Andy Carroll couldn't lace his boots. Sutton would walk into that england set up nowadays
