No one is taking any sort of lofty stance though. I haven't heard anyone who see it as more than football putting down and insulting those who don't, the same can't be said the other way around.

To be clear, I am content that the 'Up the Ra' add-on has been removed.

STVkeithKeith Downie Neil Lennon slams a section of the Celtic support for last night's banner. Says the biggest surprise is they spelled it correctly!

    That's an interesting point.

See I DON'T feel that history and politics should be divorced from the football side of the club - it's what distinguishes us from the rest.

What I'm arguing for though, is enough collective and individual savvy that we CAN hold ourselves to account without hiding behind the cult of Celtic.

Your point however, is another interesting way of looking at it that I didn't consider. I dare say there are many Celtic fans who don't give a * about anything but the football - perhaps in a way, that's more pure...

True but he clearly wouldn't state an opinion that would go against his employers, no one would.

If those fans only interested in football and those who are interested in upholding our long standing tradition of being politically aware can somehow manage to live together then we will be fine.

My biggest regret is those who think politics, and Irish politics in particular, has no place at CP don't seem to get that they are the ones attempting to change the Club. On the other side we are trying to keep with tradition. Our club is internationally renowned for our Politics, not the city, the colours or the football.....an example, teams such as Ajax have won more than Celtic however they are no where near as popular as Celtic worldwide. The reason is our unwavering support for the Irish Republican movement ( which is a popular cause everywhere apart from here!).

We dont ask for much. All we want is for us to be able to show our support for those oppressed around the world in the best Traditions of Celtic FC. We have conceded that certain songs are inappropriate in a post conflict environment and as such we will not sing them.

The songs we sing are part of the fabric of us as Irish Republicans and Descendants of Irish Republicans and are part of our culture as celtic fans. Nobody has the right to try and remove this.

Well maybe you personally dont, but there are others who do completely attach themselves to the history of Ireland and Catholicism etc, and still "seem" to act as though they are on a mission, and that Rangers and all their fans are bigoted orange scum without exceptions. They are living in a country that is full of hatred for them, and the establishment are anti Catholic, anti Irish and Celtic......so they subsequently act like victims and constantly look for reasons to bring up anything to do with these topics, always with a negative stance.

I actually cannot comprehend a life where my friends and workmates and family were to a man, Celtic fans.I would guess the vast majority in here have a similar view, but there are those that are so insular in their attitude, that they cannot see that their hatred towards all things Rangers, makes them appear to be as bitter as those they accuse.I pity those with so much bitterness, as it must be hard feeling so hard done by......but its generally the same guys with that attitude that come on here time and again.

To your point that those that are uber republican passionate are less likely to be insulting, well maybe you are right, maybe not, but most posters dont get embroiled too much in arguments, and it is usually the same old people,(myself included) who end up dragging a debate to its death, but id say the split was pretty even!:31:

    This is what I notice.

The fans who are interested in the republican traditions of the club seem to be pretty tolerant of the right of the others to be interested only in the football. But some of the ones who are only interested in the football side don't seem to reciprocate that live-and-let-live attitude.

MGM, I dont think our distaste of huns has anything to do with the problems we are having......indeed I'd advocate a truce with them to fight against the removal of our freedom of speech......despite the heavy banter, we all know there are a few decent huns out there somewhere.....intelligent enough to know this issue effects both our clubs.

    Club Statement
By: Newsroom Staff on 16 Dec, 2011 16:33
CELTIC Football Club today confirmed that it has identified an individual responsible for both the displaying of an offensive banner and the assault of a Celtic steward at last night´s match against Udinese.

The person, Ross Connolly, was arrested last night by police in Italy and he will be banned for life from attending all of Celtic´s matches.

The club is also in the process of identifying persons responsible for the use of a flare at last night´s match.

We are in possession of video and photographic evidence from the match and clearly, when those responsible are identified, the club will take the appropriate action.

Celtic is rightly proud of all that our supporters have achieved and the magnificent reputation they have earned across Europe over many years.

It is extremely disappointing therefore that the otherwise excellent behaviour of the vast majority of Celtic supporters, and the reputation of the club, has been undermined in this way, by the actions of a handful of people.
