Is anyone else interested in the ongoing case at the European Court of Justice involving the Premier League, Sky Sports and the publican taken to court for showing Greek sports channels in her pub? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
This case has the potential to bring English football to its knees yet is barely mentioned in the media.
Basically, the reason the Premier League gets so much money from Sky is because only Sky has the right to show games in the UK. The Premier League divides up each European member state and obtains the maximum revenue from each country – France/ Germany etc.
An Advocate from the ECJ has already ruled that this is against European Law.
Basically, if the Premier League loses this case – which is all but a certainty – then the value of the rights to show the games will plummet. Every pub in the UK – and Europe – will be entitled to buy digitial feeds from the cheapest broadcaster in Europe i.e Greece.
With the rise in internet televisions this will soon be as easy as watching youtube i.e. you wont need a special satellite.
The Premier League will no longer be able to pay £1B a year for the UK rights – and English clubs will no longer receive £40m a year just for playing in the premiership.
If you look hard on the internet you will find articles from people a lot smarter than you or I predicting a catastrophe in English football, with clubs unable to service their massive debts and salaries.
Personally, I am praying that it happens – because a club like Celtic with hardly any debt and a massive fan base will be so well positioned..

Watch this space.

Fingers crossed. One of the reasons I don't want Celtic to join the EPL and it's imminent collapse

A collapsed EPL would still have more funding that the SPL.

Tbh but mate do you actually think the banks are going to keep allowing these huge loans for spending? I mean even clubs like wigan are spending £5/6m on players now, that is * unheard of for a relegation candidate club:97:

Not the point - transfer values and wages in football have soared over the last decade beyond any reasonable amount, and it's because teams like West Brom and QPR suddenly find themselves with massive amounts of money to spend on average players, inflating the market values for everyone.

What this would do would bring market values back down to a more reasonable level, which would allow us to be more competitive in signing targets.

There's no way we could afford the likes of Larsson, Hartson, Sutton, Lennon nowadays and that was only a decade ago we had these boys.

Sky would raise the price for coverage to other European countries as the majority of their money is made in England. Their would be a fall in income but not as great as is being predicted.

This is the only option available to the Premier League i.e. give pan european rights to one broadcaster. But are bars in Germany and France going to pay £2000 per month to show English games? Or even close to this?

What about the poorer nations like Greece - do they just not get to watch English football anymore?

The best outcome for the Premier League - should they lose the case - is that the gap between them and the SPL goes back to the Larsson and Sutton days - I think we would all be happy with that.

Perhaps this is the kick in the bollocks that the English gme needs, to help reel in the ludicrious spending practices, because the TV revenues are astronomical. If Sky can't afford to pay them those huge sums because the profit margin is inadequate, certainly no other broadcaster is in a position to come close to matching what Sky do, then there will have to be a filtering down effect on the finances within the EPL.

I've been keeping and eye on this for a long time as my Dad also owns a pub and has been keeping tabs on it, I also posted something about this a while back.

The only thing that MIGHT happen is they will give the EPL a less lucrative deal. I think the last deal was £1.2bn over 5 or so years. I believe that runs out either next year or the year after and the Sky plan on dropping the amount of funding for the EPL. Sky are going to lose a lot of publican business if pubs are allowed to show games from other countries.

My Dad installed Sky Italia, I think it cost him approx £1200 for the year. Sky wanted £970.. a month! So it's a no brainer for people owning their own bars etc.. A lot of people moaned that Sky put their bill up by £3 a month.. my Dads went up by over £150 a month.

Sky may also look to change their pricing structure. At the moment, the pub my dad has would be considered an old mans pub, a local pub and not heaving every weekend like city centre pubs n clubs, yet he pays the same price. A city centre pub in Glasgow/Edinburgh etc.. pays the same as my Dad yet he'll probably take in a twentieth of the customers/money they do. It's hardly fair.

The sooner Sky drop the ridiculous funding for the EPL then better.
