Norwich City are on the verge of signing Scottish international goalkeeper David Marshall after his agent revealed the 21-year-old is “very keen” to come to Carrow Road.

The Celtic stopper has had limited opportunities at Parkhead since making his debut in the Scottish Cup at just 17, and is currently number two in the Hoops' pecking order behind Pole Artur Boruc.

But after interest from City manager Peter Grant, Marshall now looks set for a move to Norfolk on loan, with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Can we afford to let him go? As awesome as Boruc is, every club needs a quality 2nd choice GK.

I still rate Marshall. He is a good goalie (remember how young he is too) but needs his confidence back and some 1st team experience so I think loaning him out would be good. Maybe put a clause in his loan deal so he can be recalled quickly if needed. Certainly dont sell the guy or we could have Shay Given type regrets.

He gave up 4 goals to DC United. Thats crazy, might have been preseason but 4 to a MLS team. :54:

That destroyed his confidence, if he really gets 1st team starts maybe it will rebuild it, or maybe hes overrated. Only time will tell.

I saw him in a couple of testimonials/friendlys last year and he was terrible.
This was his chance to impress and he was slow and seemed overweight.

Now is the time to recruit good quality cover.

It is crazy the publicity he has had over the last three years and he is still only 21. I think especially with goalies they have to play and learn by mistakes over a season or so to get any good. Undoubtedly you are not allowed to do that at Celtic, making it difficult (unless forced by injuries or skintness) to bring through talent in the real key positions in the spine of the team instead of signing ready made players. I have thought in the past that you could potentially not concern too much about trophies for one season and blood about 4 or 5 of our best reserves, play them for a season, let them learn by mistakes and possibly save us millions but I think too many fans are short sighted or too hung up on the Old Firm rivalry to allow that. Best of all is if you can blood them and win too. To some degree WGS is working that fine balance well but I still think a lot of money is spent because of fan impatience and pressure.

be * typical. Yep, i think it's about time we got a new cover gk. :celt_2: Marshall's a good goaly, i don't argue but i think we ought to get a new one in case Boruc goes elsewhere.

Haven't seen much of him, but he used to be a great talent but he seems to have stagnated in the past 2 years. nontheless he's only 21 and could still play football for the next 19 years. the question is, will he fight again and prove of what he's made of or just wast his talent?

He simply has to go on loan. If he blossoms and (* forbid) Artur goes then we save millions.

I don't think we should give up on him just yet, we all know the potential he possesses, hopefully a loan period, and a drastic rise in motivation for 'ordinary' games, will make him start fulfilling that potential.

I agree that we either have to get someone else in (Craig Gordon could become available soon....?) or put a clause in the contract that we can recall him.

Letting David out on load is the best thing to do imo. He has potential to be a great goalkeeper but he needs to get experience to do that.

I just hope that he doesn’t sign for them permanently come the end of the season.

Letting him go out on loan I think is a good idea and way to hopefully raise his level of play or at the very least shop window him so we can get a good price if Strachan brings in another keeper and we decide to sell Marshall. I am sure that Strachan would do a deal where he would be able to recall Marshall if Boruc got hurt so in the meantime a loan for Marshall seems like a good idea to me.

if keeper has bad game it looks terrible that doesnt make him a bad keeper id like to see him out on loan for few months that will show us what he really like and is up to be a keeper at a big club like ours i hope so.

This is how it feels to be Celtic
I think Marshy's problem is just lack of confidence. He may or may not get a few games at the end of the season and I think he'll be okay. If he goes to Norwich that means 3rd choice keeper Gov the Gloves will be our only cover for Boruc. McGovern has a lot to learn although he looks promising, but we need Marshall to be pushing Big Artur for a place just to keep him on his toes.

Marshy has the potential to be a great keeper, but I wouldn't blame him for swapping CP for regular first team football with Granty.
As long as it's just a loan deal I'll be happy.

Sorry Keltoi, I should have read your post before posting mine.
I agree with you and feel the same way as you about Shay Given. What a bite up the * he is.
We let one of the finest goalkeepers slip though our hands. Hope we don't do the same again.
It only takes an injury to Boruc and Marshall is back in, but I feel he'll have to prove himself all over again to the masses.

And aye, we do forget how young he is.
