40 years on, is it our year?

Discussion in 'Celtic Chat' started by jonny_cfc_n01, Jan 1, 2007.

  1. its a nice dream. but we plainly are not good enough at that level. my heart sez we can do it but reality tells a different story. we should have strengthened after seville to help out henrik with a top drawer goalkeeper ,a star defender and a high class midfielder but we rested on our laurels and slapped ourselves on the back for just getting there. it showed a lack of ambition as far as i'm concerned. problem was i expect the £15 million needed to get those players wasnt available. grrrr thanks spl for pishy tv rights deal.. grrrrrr haha

  2. GS is getting good players for less money than MON is. Give GS another 2-3 season's and if he continues to progress the squad like he has, we should be able to give any team in Europe a real run for their money and that would include away from home

  3. yep, IF we can keep our good ones.

  4. If you have a good keeper and someone who can score from free kicks and whip in killer crosses its half the battle

so true the team that wins the CL is invariabley a team with one or two players who can do something special. i.e free kick specialist, or a ballplayer who can beat a man or two on the run. we have both..... dream on my son.

  6. jhimbhoab, dont take this the wrong way but are you aware of the quote button, beside edit?

  7. Would love to see it happen in my lifetime, realistically more chance of getting a W**k off the Arch Bishop of Cantebury. :shamrock: :shamrock: :shamrock:

  8. We can go all the way with a good chunk of luck.

We've got to take each game as it comes. If we can knock out AC Milan, which I believe we can, then we can go all the way, for sure.

    Game at a time though!

  9. 80/1 with William Hill to win it outright, worth a flutter or throwin away ur money???? the debate rages on..........

  10. We will need more than luck, as we seem unable to go away from home without conceeding 3 goals. :shamrock: :shamrock: :shamrock:

  11. With the way we have been playing lately I would be happy getting past Milan. The team is nowhere near ready to win the CL with luck or not. I however hope i am proved wrong

a bit too much to drink when you came up with this thread. we have done well to get to the round of 16, but we will never in a million years win the CL. no point in thinkin it

  12. Being realistic or not, thats a very defeatist attitude to have.

Did Porto ever think they'd do the UC and UCL back to back, did Liverpool really believe that they could win the UCL? Yet they did. In sport, never rule out the impossible.

I know this, especially, from being a Munster Rugby fan. They have achieved more impossible results than any other club in rugby and possible any other sport. Why? The fans make the players believe they can do anything

  13. it might be defeatist, but theres no point in suggesting that we could win it. this is a team playing not great in a weak league. we are only on top comfortably because the rest of the teams below us are worse. liverpool and porto came from stronger leagues, had more money and much better players than we do just now. they might not have expected to win it, but they are better than us. celtic is a big club, but the fans should forget about repeating the success in '67, as that was a long time ago, we will never do that again. also we should not just 'expect' to do well in european just because we are the best in scotland.

  14. Good post! :86:

  15. You said we'd never ever, not in a million years win the UCL again but then suddenly you refer to our very bad form of the last month and a half.

I wasn't refering to this season, our squad will improve because Celtic's financial situation continues to improve despite a weakening league. We'll continue to purchase better players that our current because of good scouting and bringing through better young talent because we finally are getting world class training facilties. The club has taken these step season's ago to leave clubs like Rangers struggling to get transfer funds together now

Last season I was told time and time and time again on TC that this financial superiority would never happen, look whats happened without any surprises to me. Celtic havent reached their peak, this is only the start of things to come.

  16. This is bullshit, well put and articulate, but bullshit nevertheless. No one on the planet can say we will never win the CL. And saying that the fans should just forget about it? What kind of * is that? Don't get me wrong here, im not trying to put anyone down or derive them of an opinion, but saying that we should be happy to make up the numbers is not acceptable, especially as Celtic fans. How many times have we heard WGS, amongst others, speak in reference to the huge pressure of being a celtic manager/player? "You have to hit the ground running", "the expectancy is enormous" are just a couple of the well used phrases coming from the mouths of Celtic staff members.

OK we are not in the best of positions just now, financially and domestically, but to say we should just forget about winning a tournament that everyone involved with the club strives to be in so much, is unforgivable to be honest. Of course we can win it, theres another 15 teams who can win it.

  17. Any team at the top of any league is there because the teams below are worse. Even to be top of a weaker league takes something - the mentality to regularly win. I don't expect to win CL this year but what is the point of following football at all if you don't think you've got a chance. We have a chance just as the other fifteen do. If we make the last 16 next season and maybe the last 8 the season after (it's a lot of "ifs" I know) then we will be in a position where we just need to go a wee bit further each time yo get to the last 4. If you are good enough to make the last 4 then you are good enough to have a shout of winning a tournament.

I understand that you are wanting a healthy dose of reality but we are one of the biggest clubs in the world. We should be aiming to win it otherwise what is the point of being one of the biggest ?

  18. our last success was in the uefa cup in 2003, got to the final played really well, yes we did not expect to get there from when we were put out of the champions league against Basle. but the champions league is a completely different tournament, am not trying to say the achievements in 2003 were not that good. however, the teams in the champions league are the best in the world. man utd, barcelona, ac milan, real madrid....the list goes on. celtic will always play well with the fans behind them at parkhead, but in an away setting, the team completely falls apart. for example, we beat benfica this year in the CL, very easily 3-0 and we played some of the best football for a while, but look what happened when we went to lisbon, the players played dreadful. the only way we are going to best through the knockout stages is to win 4-0 at home, and is that going to happen against milan?

  19. It took Arsenal and Man United years of playing the UCL to get used to winning in it. It happens with some teams, its happening to us. The more time in the competition we get, we'll beat this stupid hoodoo that we cant win away.
