The way i see it, it's not causing anyone offence so there is no problem. But i have mates who are huns, my girlfriend is a hun, and i know a good few huns who are decent people but prob do the same as me in their own time. So i know where to draw the line.

If i want to sing the boys of the old brigade or the merry plough boy or the sam song while in company of other people who want to do the same, what's wrong with that?

sectarianism is a hatred of one religon, Celtic don't have any songs which are anti-protestant but my csc sometimes not often plays rebel songs going to away games

That is a big question. In the definition Keltoi gives I would say that songs which sing the praises of your own group (religious, racial or whatever) are not offensive to anyone. But if the songs insult and abuse other groups in a generalised fashion then that's sectarianism. THe problem for me is that in most of Briatain any expression of a prorepublican or a proIrish Catholic nature are said to be anti-British/Protestant. This is a common misconception but what it indicates is that prejudice against Republicanism/Irish Catholics is so deeply ingrained in Britain that that to be PRO yourself is taken as being ANTI the other group.

Cheers fella. I'm the mug that mentioned the Man U * and all the xenophobic bile that he was posting about Celtic, Republicanism etc. You would not believe some of the stuff that (normally reasonable) posters had to say on it. It shows you how successful the British government and press have been over the years in their propaganda. Now it's no great surprise that people in Manchester for example hate the IRA and by association the Republican movement but you would think that the IRA (and I am not defending them) did what they did for no other reason than sheer badness.

If by sectarian songs you mean political songs then yes. Name me a song with an anti-protestant lyric...

What you describe Martin is ignorance from the Man Utd fans as they simply don't know what there talking about. Sadly this ignorance is widespread and this is even the case in our press. It's sad but I gave up getting angry about it a long time ago. I try to educate them without sinking to their level.

Thats a very good point aswell Martin.

The thing is, it's not just Ireland that should be standing up to the nastiness of the 'British' empire. There are countries all over the world that are, officially, part of Britain. Places like Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands. These places are no different than Ireland, except that the queens army succeeded in devouring the full place, whereas they could only get a section of Ireland.

People who say Hitler was an evil dictator and should have been burned at the stake for what he done, then go on and approve of the U.K. as a region - or disapprove of what the I.R.A are trying to achieve - are the biggest hypocrites i can think of.

To me, there is * ALL wrong with singing about getting Britain to * and giving Ireland back to the Irish. Even if i wasn't born in Ireland, i have Irish roots (from both parents' sides), which in my opinion gives me every right to sing about what i believe in.

Rebel songs every game - on the Bus or On The Boat (until some muppet pops up with his New Celtic Crap!)

I accept the argument about the stadium but people telling me that i can't sing songs elsewhere about Ireland's 800 years of supression is another thing!

Youve missed the point a bit (see posts above). Sectarianism just means appealing to a sect or one section of the population while not appealing to (or even offending) another section of the population. Its not neccessarily anything to so with religion. The basic idea is one mans meat is often another mans poison so best to only do stuff that could be thought as sectarian in private or exclusively around like-minded people.

Live and let live I say but I have to day I think the sam song crosses a line of basic decency and I find it hard to understand why anyone would want to sing it.

Absolutely correct. We do, allegedly, live in a political democracy. You have a right to voice a political opinion - in theory ! Again though it is complex - Dublin doesn't want N. Ireland because they know that soon the UDA and UVF would be bombing them?

So by that thoery, Christmas is a bigoted festival as it is a christian holiday and doesn't include non-christian? Or supporting a football team like Celtic that has very strong Irish links, should we start flying union jacks now to appeal to another fanbase? Of course not dont be silly, what you wrote there is pish.

You could apply that to anything, for example a pension is bigoted as only old people have a pension, pubs are bigoted for not allowing kids in, roads are bigoted towards Americans as they dont allow them to drive on the right side of the road etc etc...Of course there not bigoted just like the political songs are not bigoted in a religious sense and don't appeal to just one sect. I know a fair amount of protestants that would agree with the ideas of a united Ireland and also Athiests and Hindus. Please don't mix up politics with one's religion which of course is what your suggesting.

    Perhaps you should support Hibs?

11 people do, 6 people don`t so far..well just to say me and another few got barred from our own bus for singing sectarian songs.

Quite sad really in my opinon...you will see this bus in the official supporters bus park at every game..the only first bus double decker.

Theres another 2 buses from my home town that go to the games, however we don`t sing sectarian songs anymore.

Its all to do with a pack of Gerry Adams wannabe's. Spent half their life shouting for the IRA and now think they're fu**king snobs and are happy to get their big salaries off the Brits and run about shaking hands with loyalist murderers!

Help ma boab. You missed the point again! You should read a bit closer before coming on and telling a fellow tim to change team because his opinion aint a carbon copy of yours. There is a very wide range of opinions on this subject from 'anything goes' to 'strictly football only'.

What I gave in my post re: sectarianism was not my own opinion, just a definition cobbled from a few on-line wikipedia type dictionary/ encyclopedia sources for a similar thread some months ago. In fact my very point is similar to what you are saying-sectarian really is a problem word because so much non-bigoted stuff falls into the very loose definition of sectarianism. Basically anything that only appeals to a section (the 'sect' part of sectarianism is derived from 'section') and causes division falls into the category. Its a real problem word.
