thanks jc147 and dannighirl - good points there.
i think it was jock stein who said ," keep the party songs for the party after the game," ( or words to that effect )
i myself dont hate the huns for being protestant, i hate them for being anti-catholic.

    Aw come on Marky.

If the song lyrics were reversed, and it was "* Bless John Knox" and "* the Pope" would you honestly be on here telling us it wasn't anti-Catholic?

The song is blatantly, unashamedly, celebratorily anti-Protestant. :56:

At no point does the song deride Protestantism as a whole. What it does do is say "*" two of the biggest Catholic haters ever to have drawn breath.

To me there is a difference and aye I will say "* King Billy and John Knox" and feel no shame for saying it.

If the words to the song were something like "And when the music stops we'll kill all the * Prods" then it would be a totally different argument and I would fully understand people having a problem with the song.

At the end of the day, wether you agree with it or not....

It doesn't make one difference to me.

I'll be singing it on Sunday and singing italong with another few choice songs as soon as I hear the Hello Hello, Big Jock Knew and The famine Song:bbpd:

    * King Billy, John Knox and all the DOBS giving OUR ENTIRE SUPPORT the same kind of abuse as each other, wether we be Catholic, Protestand, Atheist, Muslim etc.........

I pointed out that the line "* John Knox" was anti-Protestant, you said it was not anti-Protestant, it was anti-Orange. You're 150 years away from that making sense.

Obviously no-one will convince you otherwise, if you're willing to say "black is white" to defend a ludicrous position.

You might as well say to me "The Pope is not a religious leader". It would make as much sense.

It's not a matter of opinion. The Pope is a religious leader. Black is not white. The song is nakedly, brazenly sectarian.

Neither am I. If they want to sing a sectarian hate song it's their decision. It's also against the law, but for me that's less important than the fact that they shame Celtic by singing it. :50:

Tbh I dont mind this song because I dont think it is anti-Protestant. It is against two people who hated Catholics imo so To me the song is about singing a big GIRUY to these two vile disgusting * and not to anyone who is a Protestant. But it is open to interpreation as you can see in this thread :50:

So how do we explain the line "* your Queen"?

Wee Lizzy's got no history of murdering or oppressing Catholics, far as I'm aware.

In fact there's no link at all between the Queen and John Knox - except of course the Queen is the head of the Protestant Church in England. How many convolutions would we need to twist up in, rather than just admit the song is sectarian?

Course it's a moot point, cos I've never heard the entire thing sung at Celtic Park. The ethics of singing part of a song that contains sectarian lyrics - that's a different issue altogether...

To be honest, I'm not sure if all the verses were just written at a later date to fit around the chorus, because the chorus was being sung at Celtic matches, or if the song has always been complete with all the verses.

    Does anybody else know?

it could be * walter smith and stick a drumstick up his * that doesnt make it sectarian its not because the guy is protestant it is cos the guy hated the catholic religion that does not make it sectarian as much as you want it to

Saying Fck John Knox is incredibly offensive to protestants. Its worse even that FTP because Knox actually was not only leader but founder of their church. Its like saying FTP and fck St. Paul all at once. The song it total idiocy and yes its very much is sectarian. Seriously some people can find no fault with themselves and their own. That kind of ability to justify and explain away even obviously sectarian songs like this is mind blowing self deception. If we need sectarianism and songs about violent conflict to make the stadium noisy then the people in it are not really there for the football.

As has been explained countless times, "* John Knox" is not anti-Protestant. I think that quote earlier in the thread sums it up - I didn't hate them because they were Protestant, I hated them because they were anti-Catholic.

We'll need to agree to disagree.

"Sectarian hate song", "they shame Celtic by singing it" - complete and utter hyperbole, IMO.

I'm not even a massive fan of the song but I'll defend others rights to sing it all day long.
