And to add to my last post. I shall be wearing a poppy at the next game. I will respect the silence. Reason being i have respect for people who are willing to lay their life on the line for the country. Anyone who has that sort of courage deserves respect. The soldiers make no choice in who they fight. They just do their duty. If anyone is to blame then the blame lies at the feet of those in power not the cannon fodder on the front line.

If anyone thinks i'll take abuse for wearing a poppy or take part in breaking the silence then they can think again. The last time it happened some * told me to remove my poppy or he'd remove it for me. I was stood there with one of my pals and her 6 year old. They took the same abuse. Needless to say i stood my ground and i'll do the same again if needs be.

And before anyone asks my reasons for wearing one......because i have every right to

Ok man. I know exactly what you mean yourself, and I haven't over thought it. Anyone with a decent education and an knowledge of the culture and history of Celtic can see the dichotomy I mentioned.

On the other side of the coin, It could be equally as odd looking in if we had a rangers fan cutting and pasting asserting he only means it represent his own personal story exclusively, no political connotation to be had.

Not over thinking at all, try googling "phoenix from ashes political" and you'll see immediately the the imagery and connotations are very valid. What is it, the fourth or fifth result in over a million worldwide?

That you simply did not know and are on a Celtic site posting inadvertently with what many would associate as a clear IRA symbol was just a kind of glorious irony, seeing as you seem to be going along with this revisionism of what is deemed to representative, acceptable and symbolic of the Celtic family in recent years.

Everything is political and you contracdict yourself by allowing them to have the right to their opinion but not have the right to express it. I have no issues with the poppy per se which is a political symbol by the way. My objection is how this is imposed on everyone in a fascist sense. For this I support those who have protested. Lastly I would support a symbol that remembered the 100's of 1000's Iraqi innocent victims of an illegal war. But no the poppy is a memorial to the dead soldiers who should never have been there in the first place. Whose really making the political points here? Yes keep politics out of soccer and that also extends to the poppy.

So are you going to remember the innocent Iraqi civilians who have been killed by the aggressors of an illegal war based on a lie? Are you going to remember the victims of Abu Graib? Do you not live in a democracy where freedom of speech and the space to express it is enshrined in law? Wear your poppy but allow me the right to not have it imposed on me without question.

I hope I'm right in saying that most people don't disagree with the individuals preference, (though I'm equally sure there are the knuckledraggers), it essentially boils down to the fact that we've been told peicemeal, "right, that's not to be remembered here, that's not to be sung here, you're out if you pin this to you're lapel, but.. oh wait, let's remember this other thing here, it's now ok to have these other things pinned to your lapel and whilst we're at it we'll speak for all of you at once by putting something on the shirt when we play!"

I think the mess has been made in the first instance by those higher up and they should at least now come out with a cohesive dialogue to help put this all in order.

I don't think i'm contradicting myself.Maybe worded it wrong. While i accept they have the right to protest i don't like the fact they brought it to the football ground fully knowing that it would affect the whole support rather than a small group. They could have chosen to do it elsewhere at their own expense and in their own time but instead they brought it to the game where it would cause the most offence and in turn have the majority of the Celtic support accused of being of similar opinion which is clearly not the case.

Secondly i don't agree the poppy is of any importance to politics. Politics only come in to the equation if you put it there. The poppy is a symbol of support for those who have fallen in battle and those who have fought protecting the country.Nothing more nothing less. If you think it's more than that then that's fine but i personally feel that's adding reason to fit the objection.

I wear the poppy for my own personal reasons.Reasons i should not need to justify to you or anyone else.If you feel that's me who's imposing anything then that's fine.I'm not disagreeing but i'd certainly disagree if you protest my right to wear it without abuse (not saying you'd do that btw).

I can accept innocent people have been killed. I am in no way supporting that but i will definitely support those who fight to protect this country and those who have done in the past. Like i said before soldiers make no choice. They just follow orders and do their duty. Blame politicians if you need to. I know a good few people in the army who are there as they couldn't find other jobs. Some of them have families, kids to feed etc. Are they wrong to provide in the only way they can or would you rather see them taking benefits for nothing?!

Yeah well done they have now humiliated the club and all the headlines are about a few mindless idiots instead of briliant football on the field :31:

Oppose the protest that is your inalienable right. I did not refer to you as a fascist. I referred to how this is being imposed on the club as fascist. The poppy is a mere symbol but symbols have other agendas. We live in a democracy. But I support the protest and allowing me to do so is a tolerant mature response.

Exactly my sentiment. The protest was not against you but the politicians as you have suggested. If the poppy respected all victims of war then I personally would have no problem. The fact is the allied forces not only killed but murdered sullies the image of the poppy. Sending young men into the conditions of Iraq because they need to feed their families is a complete travesty. You accept innocent people were killed. That's a nice gesture. How about 100's off 1000's and it has opened the internecine strife in the region. Your argument is flawed and contradicts itself by supporting one's right to express and not the right of the other to protest. That is hypocritical.

You should have protected the 6 year old by not wearing the poppy. You know what the response was going to be. You in fact inflamed the situation by your visual protest. Do you see your hypocrisy?

I totally agree. Mr Campbell was very much absent when a gentleman was kicked to death by a loyalist mob in Coleraine, his constituency. He said he was on official government business when the man's funeral took place. He couldn't bring himself to attend the funeral as a token of respect. Mr Campbell is very selective. He also one of the most vocal opponents of the peace process. I confronted him many years ago and asked him on the steps of Stormont about his begrudgery. He will always pop up when he wants to take a pop at the other side. But he is suddenly absent when his own community have questions to answer. He carries no credibility.

You are not the most intelligent person. I was playing devil's advocate which you might not understand. Your original argument was to oppose the visual protest but you were visually protesting by wearing the poppy in an environment which you expected to get opposition. And if I had a 6 year old daughter I would have protected her ears by taking the poppy off before the game and put it on after the game. Or was he and you just making a point. The person that should have taken precedence in that situation was the 6 year old. I also think the guys that delivered the venom were a bunch of mrons because I wouldn't have cared whether you wore a poppy or not.

This isn't right mate. I don't think the poppy should be worn on the shirt, and I wouldn't wear one myself as I said earlier in the thread but in no way shape or form should someone have to feel ashamed or worse scared to wear one at a Celtic match.

Hey I agree. I was only debating the gentleman's points referring to the concept of protest. I wouldn't wear it personally if I knew my 6 year old was in my presence and at the same time know that morons were going to have a go. Realism is more effective than idealism.
