Should McManus Be Captain On Return?

Discussion in 'Celtic Chat' started by Jayzhinho67, Apr 19, 2010.

  1. simple question and here is my simple answer.... YES !
Great leader and modern day mr celtic !
GET YER * BACK LADDIE !!!:shamrock:

    I say yes.
He will be back to best after playing in championship.

  2. Great leader? :97: We must be watching different players.

I think being given the captaincy was the worst thing that ever happened to Stephen McManus. His form after being given the captaincy has never matched the form he showed in Gordon Strachan's first two seasons in charge. I think we should take the burden of the captaincy off Mick's shoulders and just let him concentrate on playing his football again.

  3. you could say the same thing for brown being captain , i just think he is more of a presence on the pitch and a more commanding captain , plus who else at the club should be wearing it , personally i wish they would just give it back to lennon lol ! but we ARE missing big mick no doubt !:shamrock:

  4. The truth is that this Celtic team is short on leaders. There is not one single player in our squad who stands out as an obvious candidate to be Captain.

McManus is not a great Captain, it's debatable whether Brown is going to be a good Captain, Boruc is too much of a maverick to be Captain and that's about it. Gary Caldwell or Barry Robson could have potentially been Captain but obviously both of them have now gone.

We ARE missing Stephen McManus but we're only missing him because most of our centre-backs are out injured. When we have all our centre-backs fit again, and McManus returns to Celtic, I think he will be lucky to hold down a place in the team.

  5. i beg to differ again mate sorry :56:who would keep him out the team ? not loovens , o'dea , hooiveltd or thomson , ithink lenny will make him captain as soon as he is back , mcmanus will come back with something to prove and i would guess he was a little * at mowbray for not playing him and at the state everything is in at the moment , this loan has come back to haunt our defense that much is obvious but there may be a silver lining in it :50:

  6. McManus is a left-sided centre-back so he will be competing with O'Dea and Hooiveld for his place in the team. I would put McManus ahead of O'Dea but I want to see more of Jos Hooiveld to see what he can do. If Hooiveld turns out to be good then McManus shouldn't be in the team. That's how I see it anyway.

Neil Lennon probably would put McManus straight back in the team and give him the captaincy back. We don't know if Neily is going to get the manager's job though. A different manager might come in and just not fancy McManus and sell him. We'll just have to wait and see I suppose.........

PS. You're allowed to differ mate, that's what this place is all about. :50:

  7. McManus

I cannot believe what I am reading.

He is not a leader on the park.
He gets ripped apart by mediocre players in Scotland.
He is getting ripped apart by players in the championship.
    He lacks pace.
He cannot win a dual in the air.
He doesnt speak to refs or complains, far too nice.
He keeps going on about Scotland when his main priority should be celtic.
He says far to many nice things about rangers.

    Rating 3/10

    My opinion only!!

  8. He isn't good enough for Celtic. It is as simple as that, he shouldn't be in the team let alone be the captain. We have been unlucky that we've had so many injuries in our already poor defence, so it's easy to say that Mick would have made a difference when Josh Thompson is making stupid mistakes and Darren O'Dea has one good game every 10, but the fact is McManus cost us as many goals as either of those two has, and he was out of favour for a reason.

Loovens is just as bad, and we've only seen Hooiveld once or twice so he's still an unknown quantity, so we need at least one centre back in the summer, ideally two, selling McManus and O'Dea. Thomas Rogne looked good the couple of games he played so hopefully he makes the step up, and by all accounts Milan Misun is a great defender so he could come in also.

McManus isn't a leader, he doesn't motivate anyone and he doesn't challenge the referee when he needs to. He is Celtic through and through but that's just not enough unfortunately.

  9. Captain ?

He should not even be coming back.

The shirt obviously does shrink to fit in his case.

This is the level we have reached. FFS.

  10. From stories and ineterviews hOOiveld seems captain material. No one else at the club is a leader. We need a hardman or two to back up our skill players.

  11. At present I don't think we have any player that is suitable to be captain, sad, sad state of affairs.

Maybe Hooiveld will prove to be captain material but until we get the chance to see him then not for me.

McManus was the only available choice at the time, but I think it was too much for him being handed the captaincy and there's no-one in that squad that I'd happily give it to right now.

  12. with absence the heart grows fonder. It was the exact same with O'Dea when he was on loan at Reading. Some fans would have you believe he was the modern-day, irish version of Franz Beckenbauer that would return to save our defensive woes and our season. Although to be fair to McManus i would have him in ahead of our current pairing but he isn't good enough. He is never good enough to be Celtic captain and the fact that Brown is captain at the moment (which is only because Mowbray wanted to prove the Daily Record that they were wrong about him trying to sell him) is a disgrace. He's useless at football and even worse at leading the team. To be honest there is literally no one in our current squad capable of being captain of Celtic

  13. Its dark times if your looking forward to Mcmanus comin back, if we dont buy a decent centre half in the summer then we will have another tough season with guys like him in defence, he may be celtic minded but he's never celtic class although im beginning to forget what that is :54:

  14. No Just No sell that dud

I reckon we should go out to look for a captain centre half early 30's with a lot of experience. I would ever look at sol Campbell as an example. This I think is what McManus needs around him as I don't reckon he is that bad a player who will become better with guidance.

  16. Due to lack of options at the moment it has to be yes and hopefully somebody will be daft enough to give us 4 million to take headless chicken Broony of our hands .

  17. Our best defenders would probably be Rogne and Hooiveld. Unfortunately both are injured. I expect Celtic to sign some defenders in the summer though I would rather not ever see McManus wearing Hoops again.

  18. to be honest i can't see why people think Hooiveld is our best defender - the guy has only played 1 and a half games. How can someone say he is a good player after that amount of time. Same with Rogne he has only played 1 and a half games as well - he showed potential but again you can't say he is the best

  19. Spot on mate, I agree:50:
