    Europa League opponents Celtic and Rapid Vienna have a bit of history: this is the infamous match which saw violence erupt over two legs.

    Celtic have met their Europa League opponents Rapid Vienna before, with explosive results.

    The controversial matches took place in 1984 in the European Cup Winners’ Cup and ultimately led to Celtic being knocked out of the competition.

    Vienna were 3-1 after the first leg but lost all composure in the second as the rampant Glasgow side strolled to a 3-0 lead, and apparently a 4-3 aggregate win.

    The Austrian side resorted to foul play to try to disrupt the match. Rapid defender Rudolf Weinhofer fell to the ground claiming he had been hit by a bottle thrown from by Celtic fans.

    Replays showed that nothing had hit the player, but Rapid appealed to UEFA, and won.

    A replay was scheduled to be played at Old Trafford, which Celtic lost 1-0. The Glaswegian fans erupted into violence, targeting the Austrian players.

    The Parkhead side were fined £17,000 and ordered to play their next home European game behind closed doors.

    I have a story and a half about that "replay" match in manchester..one of the worst 2 days in my life

    i remember every second of my trip to manchester ,i even remember maddona was no1 in the charts with like a virgin..as i arrived home on the thursday night when that was on telly"top of te pops"

    man utd were playing dundee utd in dundee that night aswell

    if theres one team in the world i would love to see celtic beat is that mob..i know its different times now but i can honestly say I HATE THEM truly HATE THEM i dont hate anything except them.

    to express my hate for them i would say i like rangers more

    reall? i would prefere rangers to win ,,hows that?

    when i think about rangers i get the usual shrug them off or the thought disappears after 5 seconds when i think about RABID i get shivers and bad memories and unfinished business

    Believe me I'm not prepared to forgive & forget mate. I was at the game at Celtic Park & the replayed game at Old Trafford. There's every chance we could have won the Cup Winners Cup that year.
    I've been waiting 25 years to 'boot these cheating * in the baws again'!!
    That * Pacult is their manager, & when him & his team visit Celtic Park again for the first time in 25 years they should be given the reception they deserve.

    While I personally would never endorse anything that would tarnish celtics reputation , I for one will NEVER forgive or forget that shower of cheating *. I was at both games and can honestly say , outside re -arangers this mob are the side I most despise. Played them off the park at Celtic park with TB running the show and they totally lost the plot, tried everything , however if I ever got my hands on the clown that threw the bottle and gave them the excuse they were looking for I swear I would do time for him .Bitter as I am I hope we give them a right doing , but having watched their game with Villa last night they look a decent side.:shamrock:

    Laughing like * to myself , just saw the thread and went into a * rant , didn't read any replies just went off on one. When they come here , not sure who will be on the park first, me or Tim Park lol, if its me I will be the big guy with the grey hair foaming at the mouth !!!!
