im not trying to be negative here but i think we missed strachans tactics on a european night , we were attacking too much imo , the defence were nearly on the half way line every time the ball was in our own half , wgs' tactics could of helped us but .............

I would have been shocked at how well we passed the ball.

I was a bit perplexed when he brought fox on, but apparently he has a good left foot and wanted him to make use of it by getting good balls into the box. Anyway that aside Strachan is gone get over it.

Give up on the Strachan stuff. It's bad enough we lost last night without being reminded of him.

I think WGS's success was based on recognising our limitations and being willing to be pretty defensive. I think Mowbray was a wee bit naive. A lot of non-British teams are very adept at hitting on the break. The forwards were very fast. Yes, I think we left ourselves badly exposed at times. The thing is on a bad night a negative performace would still have been more likely to at least get us a 0-0 or scrape a 1-0. Those who criticised those tactics never contemplated the reality of playing open football against technically better, pacier teams. Before WGS, we spend decades playing the Celtic way in Europe and getting hit on the sucker punch. WGS's often misundertood tactic was to basically match those who wanted to play negatively and hit on the break. It neutralised them. It meant a 0-0 or a scraped 1-0 a lot of the time but there is no queston that it worked, especially considering that he had a budget squad of players to do it with.

If you play open football the most tenchically gifted team will win. We are usually the worst or 2nd worst team in our CL group. So in an open style we will never get through.

fair point , but i would rather watch an utter * performance with a 1-0 win than a great display and a defeat:86:

i know this might sound stupid but id be more proud of the team if they have a go at a team and lose 1-0 than play rangers type football and scrape a draw.

I suppose seems like a catch 22(think im using the right phrase). I know certain teams in europe we come up against we have to be alittle more defense minded but thats really for teams who are alot better and i wouldn't class Dynamo as alot better.

Rangers did just that to get to the UEFA final. Negativity works or, to be more accurate, realism works. I would go as far to say as it is the only way SPL standard teams can progress in Europe. Better Celtic teams than we have now failed season after season in Europe through the later 70s and early 80s. There was a lot of home and away games in WGS's CL runs where we would have been utterly embarrised by 0-5 sort of scorelines if we had played open. Especially away against top teams. His mass defending system got us unlikely scraped wins at home and kept the away defeats low. That was cynical but enought to do the job.

I will be interested to see if Mowbray plays open away from home because mainly that is a disasterous approach. It may be he has a lot to learn at CL level.

This is the wgs point really people moaned about the style at times but ffs he won trophies for us and its a shame that the style meant more to some people and his personality than us winning trophies

no-one knows, the Strachan reign is in the past, he won trophies and did a good job but the football was getting worse, he divided the support more than any other person I can think of and for that it was his time to go, however lets just look forwards and not backwards and give Mowbray and the players time to settle.

WGS team's played "attrition football" and were very often caught out at that. He was no genius in Europe and more often than not we would get 10yds beyond the half way line and throw in very deep crosses that any half decent defence would easily deal with.

Mowbray plays a far more expansive game which relies very heavily on the ball being moved around quickly. I don't think for one moment he was naive. He spoke on more than one occassion before the game and emphasised how dangerous Dynamo were, but I commend him for sticking to his game plan and not being sucked into the negative abyss of throwing all your players behind the ball and hoping somewhere along the way you'll get a bounce from a set piece and nick a goal.

I don't buy into the mindset of being so afraid of your opponents you tweak your system to the point where you are in effect playing a completely opposite game to which you are used to playing. Strachan had one full season to get his European tactics right, as after Artmedia he was essentially written off and almost had a clean slate to work with, for want of a better phrase. The same may happen with Mowbray, it remains to be seen but I for one hope we go to Moscow and play football....not shut up shop and hope we steal something. We made more than enough chances to win the game at CP and we will create in Moscow, if we're brave enough to take the game to them.

One competitive game into the season and it sounds like people are already doubting Mowbray. Give the guy a chance and as for Strachan, the guys gone so get over it !!
