Good post Danni but say the new man came in and his first objective was to get into the champs league and guarntee 10 million in income to celtic ,what sort of a come on would he get from the board ,if he said ," this team at present wont get us in there " on that could the board gamble by parting with X amount to get us there .

Seeing the teams we might have to face then it's going to be tough to get through to the CL no matter how much we spend.

Spending 10 million to get 10million income (not profit) from the CL would not make sense from a financial viewpoint, although as a fan I would love us to spend this amount on quality improvements to the team to at least be in with a shout.

I think a lot depends on how the board assess the Setanta situation on how much cash the new guy gets to spend - if we get good money for some of the players we would be looking to sell then I would hope all of it would be given to the new manager for re-investment in the team.

(I fixed that typo Josh :52: :56:- it's late to be analysing financial statements, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :56:)

dannigirl - In 2007 11million was spent on "intangible *" (players) but 6million was raised from the sale of intangible assets - a net spend of 5million

In 2008 the figures were purchases 12 million, income from sale 8million - a net spend of 4million.

if we were paying money of our debts during these two years, and got to this point were we are debt free.should we not have some extra money this year that would have been previously used to pay debts.

I see that the 10million buying players would not be profit from the champs league ,but if it got us there ,great for the support .

So that money would be writing off as in 10 million spent ,10 million payback =no profit and also no debt .

So celtic are back at square one regarding book-keeping ,so why not spend an extra 5million [for talking sake]and go into debt.

Why are the board so afraid to part with money ,its all gambles i know ,but if they are struggling to sell season books and playing in front of 40-50 thousand ,would it make a differece to them to go that extra mile ,to ensure celtic qualified for the champs league.

More importantly go on and win the league back and qualify automatically next season ,,the books would even itself out again .

Technically yes - the money that would have went to paying off the debt should now be available for investing in the team but I don't think we actually had to pay off that much last year so I don't think it would make that much of a difference.

I can't remember off the top of my head but I'll have a look at the financial statements tomorrow to see how much went towards the repayment of debt.

Not quite true - if we spent 10million on players and got 10million in income from the champions league the income figure would have to be reduced by the cost of hosting 3 champions league games, additional security arrangements, travel costs to the away games, possibly players might be entitled to performance fees all of those expenses would reduce the £10million income, so the actual profit from the CL could be around £6million, plus part of this is probably budgeted to go against other operating expenses of the club throughout the season.

I think they have to invest in the team this season in order to get a few of the supporters back, but whether or not they are willing to is another story.

I hope they do invest in the team, but I won;t be holding my breath waiting on a £10 million investment, so if it does happen I'll be pleasantly surprised rather than overly disappointed if they don't.

Yeah thats true about the 10 million made from the champs league ,by the time the deductions come off ,10 million is not 10 million .

I would just love to see celtic making a statement to the whole premier league ,by going out and buy a couple of quality players ,that they mean business this season .

Get them playing football and take this long ball out our game ,get the fans entertained by flowing football and if this was to happen ,i dont think there would be any problem in parkhead filling up again .

I think we are all hoping for that :50:

Had a look at the debt figures for the past few years:
June 2005 Net Debt was £19,329,000
    June 2006 Net Debt was £ 9,086,000
    June 2007 Net Debt was £ 4,994,000
    June 2008 Net Debt was £ 3,525,000

This has been further reduced to under £1m at December 2008. It's not quite true to say we are debt free as we still have a long term loan of £12m secured over Parkhead and Lennoxtown to be paid off - the debt figures quoted are a combination of this loan and the figure for cash per the financial statements.

10-12 millions would to the trick. Only if manager's competent, though.
