Fair point. The Maestro actually said hi farewells to The Faithful at end of season, weighing up whether to go to Inter Milan or Liverpool if memory seves me well. But he couldn`t do it and tayed at Paradise only for injury to retire him early. Why he is not involved at CP is a mystery to me to this day! In last week seen him compared to Ferguson at Huns ref unfulfilled potential - what an insult!

Dont really want to choose, both were fantastic players.

Seen a lot of people saying "McStay was unfortunate to be playing in that side" or "McStay shone in a poor team".

Fair enough, but Collins did the same.

Probably the best understanding of 2 central midfield players I've ever seen at Celtic.

There seemed to be an agreement that when one burst forward, the other went into auto pilot, and covered in behind.

The fact that both could do either job to the high standard they showed, was a class apart.

In today's game with defensive and attacking midfielders, to have 2 players in the same team who could do both positions admirably, speaks volumes for their ability.

Collins had a cracking left foot, demonstrated here:

    YouTube - Celtic v Hearts 25/11/1995

I was really young but i think i'll go for McStay! His celebration when hughes equalised vs Rangers in 96 was awesome.

Went for Collins. Outside of Larsson, he's the best player I've seen in a Celtic jersey. I've got a '95-'97 home top, with the big white square on the back and "11" sits in it. Even got Collins signature on it. It's sad to think there will be a few of the younger members on here who will only know him as the guy who flashed his abs at a young Hibs team!

McStay all the way for me, Collins a great player also but the Maestro was just a step above.

Born in 85 so missed the best of McStay, but before he left Collins was my idol.

From waht ive seen/heard I think McStay was an all round better football though.

i dont understand that, if you're old enough to remember collins you're old enough to remember mc stay, they were in the same time. it mightn't have been the maestro at his peak but he was still a class act

Gimme a break mate, I was a kid, either way I can't remember much of him at the time (95ish), at which time I remember being a big fan of Collins.

What I was saying is that I can't remember the best of McStay - that would be what the early 90s?

i was born in 83 buddy and i can remember the maestro still being a top player, the first time i saw him play was 88. some would argue, and i would agree, mc stays best days were in the late 80's before his knee trouble started. even around 95 he was still excellent just not as box to box as he used to be

No hesitation in voting Mc Stay. Can only admire the way he kept it all together through the bad times. The guy could have gone anywhere to play.

Am the same age as you chief but you've obviously got a better memory than me coz i remember McStay but not the way some members do. I remember loving the guy of course but i think most guys about our age or a bit younger would remember Collins for the likes of the Cologne game, or the free kick against the huns, amazing.

If i was maybe 5 years older then no doubt McStay would have had a better impact on my memory but as it stands Collins was my first real idol at Celtic :shamrock:
