Steve Clarke will make a last minute cap call on Leigh Griffiths with Celtic getting the final say on a potential Scotland return.

The Dark Blues boss names his squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Russia and Belgium at lunchtime on Tuesday with a major question mark hanging over the inclusion of the Hoops striker.

Clarke is awaiting a green light from Celtic over Griffiths who’s dropped down the pecking order under Neil Lennon.

The 29-year-old last appeared in a Scotland shirt in a Nations League clash against Albania last September before taking six months out to address personal issues after withdrawing from Alex McLeish’s squad for a double header against Israel and Portugal.

Despite making a successful first team return, he’s been forced to play second fiddle to Odsonne Edouard and now appears to have been overtaken by new Hoops hero Vakoun Bayo who bagged a weekend double against Hearts.

Griffiths was restricted to just 12 minutes at the end of the win over the Jambos and played from the start in a Reserve Cup for Celtic against Dundee where he scored in a 4-2 victory.

The striker’s last started a league game for Celtic against Motherwell earlier in August and was also selected form the start in the cup game against Dunfermline and Clarke will be guided by the champions over whether the player is ready for selection for his country

Not only should he be picked, he should play.

Scotland’s only guaranteed supplier of goals.

Leigh has said himself he needs to get up to speed.

    No point in rushing him.

    * delighted he's not playing; too many international managers have thrown our players in half fit and we've lost them for weeks and months. He's only playing development league for us ffs

Stevie Clare has given valid reasons for not picking Griff which is fair enough. As a Scotland fan I would like to see him play, hes the only real goal scorer we have. We have plenty of big donkeys who can 'hold the ball up' but they cant finish.

STEVE Clarke said last night that he omitted Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths from his Scotland squad for next month’s Euro 2020 qualifying double header against Russia and Belgium to give him the breathing space he needs to return to his best form.

The former Tartan Army favourite has scored three goals in eight appearances under Neil Lennon this season but after consultations with Celtic staff, Clarke decided he wasn’t quite ready to return. There is no place either for his former Kilmarnock striker Eamonn Brophy, who has fallen victim to a difficult start to the campaign at Rugby Park.

I spoke to quite a few people about Leigh,” the Scotland manager said. “Listen, everybody knows what Leigh’s good at. When he’s fit and firing and 100-per-cent he’s a big, big talent.

“He’s come a long way in a short space of time after a really serious chapter in his life. Don’t forget, it wasn’t that long ago he wasn’t even training, he wasn’t playing. He hasn’t got a lot of minutes in his legs this year – never mind this season.

“And rather than put him under the pressure of bringing him into the squad, I’d rather give him a little bit more time to breathe to get fit at Celtic. Also to get back to the level of sharpness that he needs to be to be a top player. I don’t think that he’s quite fully fit and firing in the way that he can do.

“You could call him in regardless,” Clarke added. “But then you’d be putting the boy under even more pressure. And maybe at this stage he doesn’t need that.”

Taking Griffiths’ goals from the equation removes a potent attacking option but Clarke can at least add Robert Snodgrass and Steven Naismith to his mix. The West Ham forward returns to the group for the first time in almost a year, when he wasn’t stripped for the Nations League encounter with Israel in Haifa under Alex McLeish. While Clarke has been less successful in persuading some other veteran refusenik players, including Sheffield Wednesday’s Steven Fletcher, to return to the fold, he has no intention of giving up trying.

I think hes looked raring to go whenever he has played this season.

Would probably do him good to be back in and around the squad. Hey ho.

I believe the "dark blues" refers to how you normally feel after watching a Scotland match.

It makes no difference. We're going to get well and truly pumped rotten. Can't see the ball getting to Leigh much at all if he was fit. Sad reality.

    Just about to post this.

It would do his confidence the world of good. Still better than every other striker in that squad even if he’s not at 100% imo.

Maybe had another wee setback in training or whatever, * knows.

I'm glad he's no gonna be round rotten hun * like Jack and McBurnie if I'm honest..

The Scotland squad might be daunting at the minute having only been back around our own club squad for a short period of time..
