When looking at examples of the success Celtic have had in discovering talent from around the globe and selling it on for vast profit, it can be easy to become fixated on pound signs and forget about the footballing contribution of players like Virgil Van Dijk, Victor Wanyama and perhaps inevitably, Moussa Dembele, while they graced the green and white hoops.

While there is a temptation already to speculate on what type of return Celtic may eventually get for their sizable inital investment in Krasnodar’s Kouassi Eboue, it is also worth considering what he can bring to Celtic in the here and now.

The 19-year-old undoubtedly has room for improvement in his game, and there is plenty for him to learn under the watchful eye of Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers. But according to Danny Armstrong, a Russian football expert based in Moscow and English editor of RT Sport, Eboue already has all the attributes required to be a success in Scottish football, and pertinently, in European competition too.

“I think he’s ready to go straight into the first team,” Armstrong told Herald Sport. “I don’t know what the plans they have for him are, as in Krasnodar he was brought in for the reserve side but started getting picked for the first team pretty quickly, but for me now he is ready to walk into the first team at Celtic.

“It’s been a real whirlwind eight months for him, but Krasnodar realised that he could do a job at the base of their midfield, and from that, he started getting picked for the Ivory Coast senior squad even though he is only 18 or 19. The Ivory Coast have got a fantastic record of producing some great midfielders, but he has shown that it isn’t a step too far for him.

“His attitude and his physical attributes more than make up for his inexperience. I don’t see any reason why he would struggle in Europe in general, and certainly in the Scottish league.

“One of my colleagues, who is very invested in the Russian league, says that he has never seen anybody at 19-years-old who has got such a complete game. For somebody born in 1997, the sky is the limit for him.

“There’s no chance you would think he was 19. He has been compared to Alex Song, who is another African player who played in Russia, so he’s a very good player.”

Armstrong, who also has a keen interest in Celtic and the Scottish game, believes that Eboue’s wholehearted commitment will endear him to the Celtic support straight away.

“One of the things that I have noticed about him is that he chases lost causes,” he said. “He scored his first goal against Maltese club Birkirkara in the Europa League this season, chasing a lost cause by running 20 or 30 yards. The engine on him is absolutely fantastic.

“He can really get at you and he can mix it. I am intrigued how he would get on playing alongside Scott Brown. Brown hasn’t got the coolest head on him at the best of times, but I think he will channel that energy that he has got.

“He is kind of raw player, but he has fantastic ability and isn’t just a physical player that runs all day. He wears his heart on his sleeve though and he has really committed himself to Krasnodar this year, and that’s one of the reasons why he’s got this move to Celtic.”

The rough and tumble of the Russian Premier League is likely to have provided all of the grounding Eboue will require to cope with the physical demands of playing in Scotland’s top tier, but how one so young will cope with the heady expectations placed on his shoulders by the ever-expectant Celtic Park throngs is another question entirely.

The environment he has come from in Krasnodar is hardly free of expectation, but Armstrong feels the youngster will not be bowed by the step up in pressure that will come from playing for one of the biggest clubs on the continent.

“Celtic Park is completely different to anything he’s ever known,” he said. “The atmosphere at Celtic Park is second to none. I’ve been up there as a fan and on a good European night or an Old Firm derby it’s unbelievable.

“This kid has really not got much fear though. The Russian league is physical at the best of times, and it’s challenging on your body, especially if you’re African and aren’t used to the temperatures or the artificial pitches

“It’s a lot to take in, especially if you are only 18 or 19 years old, but he moved to Armenia to break through and spent a year there, and now he has broken through in to the first team at Krasnodar quickly.

“There is a lot of expectation on Krasnodar at the minute themselves. They’ve just opened their new stadium, and Krasnodar is pretty much unlike any other Russian city.

“It’s very European, it’s a resort town, and it’s right down in the south of Russia and is miles away from Moscow and miles away from the far east. It’s very much its own city, so the people there have a big expectation on their football team.

“It’s certainly not on the same level as Celtic, but that expectation is something that he has shown a complete indifference to. He doesn’t have any fear.

“The progression thus far has been nothing short of impressive, but there’s still a long way to go for him. He’ll want to break into the Ivory Coast side, and play regularly in European football for Celtic.

“Only then will we be able to say if he is ready to go and emulate the likes of Virgil Van Dijk who is working wonders at Southampton.

“Celtic would probably be the perfect route for him to do that. From the club’s perspective, they have signed a 19-year-old-kid who can already do so much. They will want to hold onto him for a few years, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he attracts the attention of an Everton, for example, as a replacement for Gareth Barry before too long.

“If Celtic have got anything about them though they will realise they have got a really decent player on their hands here.”

Was thinking that myself.

Depressing in a way but also inevitable. Shows we must be doing something right I suppose.

Just need to hope we get at least a good 2 or 3 years out of him if he is the real deal.

Any relation to Eboue that was at Arsenal?Read up a bit on him,never saw him play,although he has been playing as a DM sounds like their is more to his game,hopefully the next Yaya Toure.

Was also reading his idol is Pogba I'm probably getting a bit carried away but could see Rodgers trying to mould this guy into a complete midfielder as he sounds like he has good technical skills to develop

watched a vid when Brendan has said he prefers 3 in the midfield, with one sitting and a runner either side,wouldnt be surprised if Broony was the sitter with Armstrong and Eboue the runners,means Rogic drops out though,unless a diamond formation

Rogic is not dropping out, he is integral to our style of play and that's before we add his goals into it aswell.
