CLOUGH ON DEFENDING - ZONAL MARKING
I didn‘t ask any of my players to mark an opponent out of the game, not once. I would give them the instruction ‗you look after your own patch no matter who comes into it. ‗You couldn‘t get to him on the near post because he‘s quicker than you‘. So you stand in your patch and if he comes into your patch you deal with it … if he goes hold your position …The ball will come across at some stage and if you‘re not around it will be the one they put in the net ” Brian Clough, Walking on Water

King Kenny and Henrik. Proud to have seen them both play.
If our defenders would just * JUMP instead of standing like * diddies it might help. Scared of marking their handsome faces.....shitebags.

It's been there since Strachan was in charge, Lenny should hav got rid of it and now Ronny seems determined to stick with it, I just don't understand what it achieves, especially with a brand new defensive line-up.

Defending set-pieces is very simple, just pick a man and mark him, what benefit comes from it (unless you are Kaka)?

Benefit could be that with man marking, players can run around and mix all your players up - like when the ball comes in if you are man marking you basically dont know where the ball is if you are looking at and following a man - also the problem that if you and others are being dragged about that you will bump into each other and lose the men who will end up free.

Where as with zonal marking its likely you will have a man near were the ball is coming.

If I was a player id probably rather zonal mark than man mark as atleast zonal you know your job, to stay there and if the balls coming in get the nut on it.

Man marking then you're caught between following a guy and trying to know where the balls coming, take your eye off one for a split second and you could be * - and it is hard to keep your eye on both, especially if the player makes a run behind you and you need to turn the opposite way the balls coming from.

Zonal Marking is a load of pish, just every * decide who are they markin at corners and free kicks and don't * move away fae him until the ball is cleared. Its no rocket science ffs.

Easier said than done though, what happens if when the ball comes in none of our players can see it as they're all trying to look at guys moving away from them so then all their players can see the ball and the couple close could attack it while our players dont have a clue where it is.

A mix of both is probably best, have 7 guys marking zones and 3 guys following their biggest players, that way we can atleast block their big players from running while the others are covering the main areas.

Professional footballers should be able to watch the guy and also be aware of where the ball is at the same time, its no that difficult.

No conincidence that we are struggling at the back when we have had so much turn over from last seasons back line. No Matthews who played a lot of the games at right back and now Van Dijk as well as Denayer who were the bed rock of the team gone from the center. We really need Simunovic to hit the ground running and come in and be as good as Van Dijk was right from the off when he signed for us.
