My family and I went through to Edinburgh yesterday to see the Ray Harryhausen exibition. I was diving, but all through the journey my daughter was telling me about all the birds she was seeing. There and back, all I heard was; "Buzzard, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Crows".
She must have seen between 10/15 raptors on the journey, And she took great pleasure in telling me. As I was driving, I saw nothing, but she had a great birding day.
On a side note, the exibition was superb .

Thanks doll :50: Not been doing much of this lately as I think all the wildlife have gone into hiding. That and the fact a lot of things I've seen in the last few years seem to have disappeared :87:

We've planted lots of natives in our yard which attracts quite a range of nectar eating parrots and lorikeets. Here's a small selection:

australian parrots - Bing images (my wife's fave)

Australian Lorikeet - Bing images (get millions of these)

cockatoo - Bing images (my fave)

At the last house we lived there was quite a nice (mid sized) Jacaranda growing next to the deck and one summer evening I got home and saw two cockies deliberately gnawing off bits of foliage, so I shouted and waved my arms at them. One flew off but the other just stared at me and I could see it thinking: "You're telling me...a cockie...what to do? You must be * mad."

Sure enough, when I got home the following evening, that Jacaranda was decimated. Looked like it had been through a council woodchipper. I could just imagine the evil glee with which those * cockies destroyed our tree.

Now that the garden's quite established we also get some of the smaller birds which can hide in the shrubs from larger predators. Here's another small selection:

    pardalote - Bing

    finches - Bing

    Superb Fairy-wren | BirdLife Australia

We also see this fellow several times a week but he doesn't often come close, and when he does he's gone far too quickly to grab your camera:

white bellied sea eagle - Bing

About ten years ago I walked out of my door and just happened to glance at the house further up the hill. As I did a sea eagle (which had been sitting on their deck rail) took off and flew straight over my head - close enough for me to feel the wind from his wings. He was absolutely huge.

I've had quite a good weekend as far as birds is concerned. On Saturday morning, I got out the car, looked around as I'm always checking out bird calls when I hear them. All of a sudden, a black and white bird flew out of a tree. Slightly smaller than a Starling. I was puzzled as it looked like Pied Flycatcher. When I got home, I checked my daughter's massive birdbook to see what I'd seen. All things pointed to a Pied Flycatcher, but I've never seen one in the city.
On Sunday morning, we were coming home from the Fort in Glasgow, when I saw a Common Gull. Not seen one of these birds in a while, so to see one was superb.

    * me we are inundated with common gulls here. See them every day and they get more vicious. They seem to knock the street pigeons out of the air and then feast in them. You would see a lot of dead pigeons about and you know the gulls have got them. Don’t leave my Yorkie in the garden on his own.

I know a lot of people hate Gulls but some of them are among my favourite birds. I do love a Black-Headed Gull.

Think it was a hooded gull (is that the name) I posted a pic of a few months back on here. Swooping down on a bin for Burger King bag. Aye but not a fan of gulls.

Think that's a hooded crow packy, crow's are one of my favourite bird's they're very clever
I know what you mean about the common seagulls we get them swooping down at us when they've got chick's, they're a nuisance but it's probably our fault with all the junk food takeaway rubbish we leave lying around, they've adapted and humans means food
