Thanks Cider, nice of you to say. If only more people were like the GREAT group of wild-life addicts on this thread , the world would be a better place.

I have a question for any budding ornithologists.

I seen a Crow some years ago murdering a pigeon by pecking its head off. It didn't eat the pigeon or anything and it just seemed strange. I've tried to google why this would happen but can't find an answer.
I assumed that the pigeon maybe got close to the Crow nest or something.
I've never seen or heard of anything like this before, does anyone know why this would happen or if Crows are known do this type of thing?

I'm sorry I know posts in here are usually of a happy nature

Never seen this behaviour, or even heard of it, so I'm thinking territorial behaviour. Nature is beautiful, but really cruel.

Very strange behaviour indeed. I will ask other birders if they know if anything like this. I have never come across this in my countless hours in the field:50:

Yesterday I was delighted to see the local family party of Green Woodpeckers,Mum,dad and their 2 fully grown young.
Today with Ruby Roo as always of course a family party of Raven, also 2 parents and 2 fully grown young.
2 pairs of Raven have been successful once again on my local patch:36:

I've been off work this last week , and been out walking regularly . I've seen lots of Butterflies and several birds , but the highlight of the week came today . I was very close to a Roe Deer Buck . It was a picture of health . It bounded clear of me into a field of barley . It stopped after circa 30 yards , and turned around to take a long look at me . After 20 or so seconds , it took off again . A wonderful sight seeing its strength and speed up close .

A few weeks ago I saw a Carrion Crow predate a young Starling , peck it to death ,.then eat it. while all this was happening, another Crow was watching out for Starlings dive bombing the action. Crows are VERY clever Scotia

Yes a good few years ago I was with my nephew when he was young and we were near a group of Rabbits and I told him the young ones better be careful as some Crows were watching them.
And just a few minutes after I said that one of the Crows got one of the young Rabbits, killed it and started to eat it,joined by it’s mate for the feast.
My nephew said “The Young rabbit should have been careful:84:
And yes Crows are very clever, one of the few animals that can recognise faces and their own reflection.
