I have another idea as to what to red band means but some guy has told me the red band is representative of Govan Burgh. No explanation, just that answer. I've searched for Govan Burgh & nothing I've read would justify or explain the red band.

Any historians aware of the reason why & when it started.

    Cheers guys

That's the Feinian blood they always say they are up to their knees in.

I'd get the buzzer in QI for that answer :giggle1:

Amoruso used to cut his off.

He must’ve * despised Govan, or whatever other bullshit reason they want to give to excuse their disgusting, hateful nature.

Or maybe he knew exactly what it meant and was disgusted.

I've always heard that it's about being 'up to their knees in * blood', but I've never looked into it and there won't be any official source from their side that confirms that, for obvious reasons.

I've heard the up to their knees in * blood thing too. If you look at pictures, Amoruso always folded his the other way.

You would like to think that it didn't mean anything as bigoted as being up to their knees in * blood however, it's the huns we are talking about and you wouldn't put it past them

I mind of reading a story that when Jock Wallace came back to them for a 2nd time, they were wearing white socks. He ordered the change back to the black and red top, stating "its not ranger's if we don't play in theses socks"

We all knew the real reason....

It is meant to be the colours of Govan Burgh. They had scarfs like that when they went down the leagues as a protest

That's the reply I had off some guy on twitter who had made a comment on someone criticizing the song book. I said removing the red band would give them one less song to sing about & his reply was it was to do with Govan Burgh.
Im going with the knees in * blood that we all know & despise so much. Scum!

I've heard the "official" story about it is to represent the old ship yards in govan and the boats that had the big chimney things, usually painted in black and red.

I'm tending to agree with that being the legit original reasoning.
They wasn't always bigoted * like they have been the past few decades.

However, that's not what they represent for the fans any more.
And the backlash they get when they change away from it is go one reason we all know why.

“They wasn't always bigoted * like they have been the past few decades.“, you mean the club that didn’t sign a Catholic for their first hundred years

That's not actually true, until the 1920s they had signed catholics, it was only after that they had their no catholic policy.

Yep, it's when thousands of shipyard workers came from Belfast to work on the Clyde and allied themselves to Rangers that the bigotry thing really took hold.

If anyone genuinely believes it’s anything other than the obvious I presume the orange kits they play in are because it’s Govan’s town colour?

    Don’t button up the back.
