Baresi would be right up there. Possible Maldini as well.

Maldini is the best I've ever seen.

In more modern times, Nesta was absolutely incredible. Horrible luck with injuries but still managed to stroll through games.

Beckenbauer, a complete player, so much more than just a defender.

Given it's asking the best defensive players (i.e. implying it is based on defensive ability) I can comfortably say Cafu, Carlos and Facchetti should be way down that list of players already given.

Baresi, Maldini, Scirea and, based solely on reputation (even from fellow Scots), Moore.

    Baresi and Maldini..................wow!

As a side note: Bobo Balde is genuinely the most dominant, imposing centre back I've ever seen.

He was Australian, mate. I agree he was good at Palace but for Der Hun, he was abysmal. Probably in my top 12 though.

Also the most intelligent; the way he filled up that diesel tank with petrol really showed his understanding of the game. True class.

Imo Bobby Moore was, by far, the best Centre half the world has seen.

Maldini was probably the best defender I can remember growing up. Outstanding professional. Nesta was another top defender. Milan always seemed to have a great defense. Costacurta as well was a good defender

A quality solid defender.... Lothar Matthaus

Wouldn't say Cafu and Roberto Carlos were that good defensively they were world class in their ability to go forward.

Ruud Krol's a good shout. And Maldini was a class player. Myself, am a big fan of Jaap Stam
