Ok can you see how absurd this situation is then? Our fans are acting like selling your best player for x amount of money and only getting pennies on the dollar to spend on a replacement is an ok thing for us to do.

The tail is truly wagging the dog at our club. The whole point of raising finance is to make our team better not the other way around where our football team is there to service the PLC.

It would be better to be going into the champions league with a settled team, whats the point in having him for the qualifiers then losing him for the important group games

Even if we bought a player to replace him he might not have settled in time, I would rather guarantee group games first.

would be better to get to the group stages with a team that can compete surely thats the point, rather than just to make up the numbers like a couple of years ago after selling Hooper and Wanyama

I can see what you are trying to say but surely it would be better to get 2 new CBs early in the window, allow them to settle in and get used to playing together during the pre-season friendlies, but also have VVD here until after the qualifiers to help us make the group stages, then let the new CBs solidify thier partnership further at the start of the league campaign.
The group stages start in mid September (I think), they should have enough time to gel before then.
Plus, with having VVD there over the pre-season, he can help them adjust and show them the ropes so to speak.

I dare say their agents are aware of that and that may be a reason for it not happening.

The problem with selling Van Dijk before the qualifiers is that we simply can't buy anyone that good within our budget. We have to develop players to that level (as we have done with Van Dijk). Spending all the Van Dijk money on an established defender as good as he is (in the incredibly unlikely event he agreed to come) would be a poor investment and smash our wage structure.

By far the better option is to keep him until after the qualifiers and then invest the money in prospects targeted by our scouts as usual.

Yeah, fair point. Lawwell's not daft. If it's not happening, it's for a reason.

You're preaching to the choir. The club is terrified to push on.

Id prefer to just get to the group stages with what we have , then take it from there.

Yep if he could have added the extra 6 months he would have and would do in all of the transfers I imagine.

He has hardly covered himself in glory in Europe though, has he? I think his attacking style of play for a defender is actually detrimental to us in europe. The proof is in the pudding, results are there to see.
I'm not for a second suggesting that he is not a tremendous player and a great asset foir us. if he goes before the qualifiers then it must be reinvested, i think we all agree on that. And if we get upwards of 10m for him then there is no reason why we cant get an excellent replacement who wants to be here.

    Absolutely brilliant.

Must be great to live in your world mate, would love to see you in PL's role for half a day.

"Alright Ronny, we just sold big Virgil for £12m, so that's £12m straight in the pot for you to go out and sign a quality Centre half and push this club on. If we sell THAT player for £15m, you'll get that money too, and so on and so forth. Good job, crack on!"

Must be enjoyable seeing everything at such a surface level. How do we pay for the stadium and all it's cost's, what about all the staff? What about increasing any other players wages? What if we needed to sign two players but only sold one? Do you think we keep the the entire extra money in a huge cupboard in case of a rainy day?

Fck all that, we have a new shiny £12 million pound player, life is good! :icon_mrgreen:

And, of course, the punchline - the club is terrified to push on. I wonder what basis that's on? :56::56::56:

Even after all that happened to those dead * we still have fans who don't get it. It's on their own doorstep ffs. A club lies broken and dead in the gutter, * over forever and the corpse raped anally by any fraudster than fancies a shot as he dances by.

And of course the fact that Celtic are CONSTANTLY mooted as a fantastically run club by all and sundry by MUCH financially brighter people on this board (og1 notwithstanding of course: Joe Ledley's contract)

But nah, "just spend the * money Celtic - you are scared not to"

    Truly bizarre.
