Sheffield United have dropped their interest in Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas.

The English Championship side have walked away due to the cost of the deal, according to the Daily Mail.

Barkas is surplus to requirements under Ange Postecoglou but the Parkhead side are looking to recoup some money on the 27-year-old.

It's been reported that Celtic wanted the Blades to pay a loan fee for Barkas plus a significant percentage of his £20,000 per week salary.

The Hoops also wanted the Bramall Lane side to agree to an option to buy clause, believed to be in the region of £2.5 million.

Sheffield United, and former Hibs boss, Paul Heckingbottom viewed the deal as too expensive and negotiations have ended between the two parties.

Barkas arrived at Celtic in July 2020 for an initial £4.5 million fee but he's failed to impress since moving to Scotland.

The Greek international made some high profile mistakes and he was eventually dropped by Neil Lennon in favour of Scott Bain.

After starting against FC Midtjylland in Postecoglou's first competitive game in charge, Barkas has barely featured in any of Celtic's matchday squads after the signing of Joe Hart.

The former AEK Athens goalkeeper made a rare start in the 3-1 win over St Johnstone on Boxing Day with Hart and Bain unavailable.

 

Haha £20k a week.

A shocking transfer all round. Really poor recruitment.

Well if the Daily Mail said it, it must be true.

 

If that is true that’s shockingly poor recruitment. Sounds like they just took Gordons wage and handed it to him.

No wonder we are struggling to shift him. I see talk of a loan fee which is fair enough but taking his full wage would be worth it if he gets game time in the shop window. If it’s just an option we well there’s no point getting too bothered about having that in the deal.

 

At this point getting him off the wage bill would be a win, never mind a fee.

One * of a challange to try to loan out the worst Celtic player in the history of the club.

 

I’m sure the article doesn’t know the real numbers but he probably is on a decent wage.

It’ll be some achievement to move him on without having to pay a settlement.

I think I would offer him on loan for whatever wages I could get someone to pay and apart from that keep him in the development squad.

At some point he will need to consider his next contract and do something to make sure he gets one. Saying that, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s pretty much done with football now and just wants to pick up his wages then more or less retire.

 

Barkas isn’t on £20k a week (closer to half that) and Celtic aren’t holding out for £2.5m to sell him.

 

He’s not on £20k a week ffs. It’s £12.5k.
