There's a lot of people who actually would but for people like myself it's a * rip off. I have Sky, I don't even have a TV aerial on my home and I watch BBC channels once in a blue moon. So I don't use their broadcasting stations or their antennas nor watch their * channels but in order to watch my satellite television which I pay for each month in my subscription I'm forced to but a TV licence on top of that. Granted there's people who like the BBC but I'm not one of them and I'm forking out money for some other * to watch Eastenders :31:

    Who's breaking the rules?????

If you think that the law saying "If you own a TV and don't buy a TV licence for something you don't want (BBC) we'll fine you even more" isn't a threat then what is a threat to you?

Forced = "buy it or else"

You can own a tv without a TV license as long as you don't watch tv on it. Can still be used for non-live viewing, dvds and consoles.

Well yeah true but the vast majority of people who own a TV also watch TV or are at least hooked up to watch TV, I wasn't actually referring to physically owning the TV itself, I was referring to having a fully functioning TV in the household.

that's false you need a TV license as long as the TV is not plugged in or its a black and white TV, you need a TV license even if you have no TV in your home but you have a laptop or PC with internet access due to being able to stream BBC from websites/iPlayer.

    Fair enough.

    Sorry you're mistaken; http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/about/foi-legal-framework-AB16/

You also do not need a licence for owning a laptop with internet connection.

Aye, they're well known for telling that lie. They have no legal right of entry into your home and as you can see it's on their website that you don't need one unless you're watching live tv programmes as they're being shown. They want the money from you for the licence and they won't care if they have to lie about their own rules to get you to pay.

The guy at the front door probably hadn't a * skooby about what he was talking about.

If any of these TVL "inspectors" come to your door, simply shut the door in there face.

Just done a little looking up on this and I think that this part of the rules is the most important:

Now although it states that ownership of a television set or laptop doesn't require a TV Licence, I'd say that a laptop and an internet connection would fall under the the "the installation and use of such equipment for television reception" A laptop plus a broadband connection is in reality a television receiver and would therefore require a licence.

Nope. Not unless you're watching live tv.

"Act 2003 provides for a system of TV licensing and makes it an offence to install or use a television receiver without a valid licence."

Surely a laptop coupled with an internet connection is a television receiver? It states "install or use" not just only if you watch it.

Laptop with an internet connection is not a television receiver.

Two answers there explain it fairly accurately. Your computer only becomes a television receiver if you have a tuner installed in order to watch live tv as it's being shown on tv.

Fair enough :50: It still seems like a grey area to me

To be honest it's starting to confuse me right now :56:
