He's 23. Weird signing from Real.

I'd imagine it's a loan to buy option if true.

He'd only played 14 games for AIK before moving to Real, wonder why they went for him..

Anyway, he's 24 in July and doesn't have much 1st team experience to go by. As I said, I'd think that if there is any genuine interest we'd be looking at a permanent deal down the road as well.

Even if this is bollocks, I think we can tell for sure now that RD is after a big bastarding * up front.

Let's be honest, a Madrid hand me down is hardly a bad thing, most of the time, for a club like us just now..

I imagine a fee or loan to buy would be relatively small for this guy, but he obviously has potential. Just needs a club to give him a real chance..

Deffo the kind of players we should be looking at..

Said it before but I can see us bringing in more than one forward anyway, so this wouldn't hurt to have different options..

The others are Glenn Loovens who I think is a good enough CB or Daniel Majstorovic who I think may be retired

He was bought for Castilla, and he was never particularly good either, he had some good games, scored a cracking goal against Djurgården. I rate Pukki and Baldé much higher.

About five years ago Markkanen was an ultra fan in Jyväskylä, playing in the lower leagues in Finland. It is said he started training "professionally" just before he turned 20. Since then his rise has been unbelievable.

2011 he played in the Finnish 3rd level.
2012 he debuted for Jyväskylä (the team where he was an ultra fan just 1-2 years before) in the Finnish league and scored a hat trick in one of his first games
2013 some injuries, but in the end of the season he was loaned to Finland's biggest club HJK
2014 he was sold to one of Sweden's biggest clubs AIK. He was expected to start season as their 4th striker or so, but he scored over 10 goals in the pre-season and suddenly became the club's number one striker, scoring at will in the Swedish league.
2014 a few months later he was purchased by Real Madrid. He was Zinedine Zidane's first signing, and Zidane was the man who brought Markkanen to Real Madrid.
2014-15 in Madrid was poor because he was injured almost the whole season. Still he got called up to Finland senior national team a few times.

Basically in 2 years from Finnish 3rd level to Real Madrid.

This should prove why his scoring record is not impressive. He hasn't had much time to play anywhere since he has been moving to better clubs so quickly.

Consider the fact that he's 197cm. Many such big strikers develop much later. Seeing how fast Markkanen has risen from a complete nobody into a Real Madrid player (personally vouched by Zidane himself) should tell something about Markkanen's possible potential.

It's possible that he'll only turn out to be a Swedish league level striker but it's also possible he'll be a lot, lot more.

    Worrying.

If you feel that way you can't be the only one, how on earth did he manage a move to Real Madrid?:56:

Maybe because comparing Pukki to Markkanen is just as clever as comparing Messi to Manuel Neuer.

Messi might be a better football player, but he'd suck in Neuer's shoes. Pukki would suck as a Markkanen-type target, and Markkanen would suck playing in the counter-attacking role that suits Pukki.

Wonder if we could get Trochowski up and running again. Must be a quality player still in there that could add something to the squad.

Not at all. Your comparison is just stupid, as you are trying to make your point. It does not work though, as I am comparing a striker target to strikers we have had at the club, and if I would bring in a new one, I would want him to be better than recent flops. In the end we are looking for a striker that will score goals, and I can't see Markkanen being that striker.

To be honest, it was a very weird transfer, not something I see often in Sweden. He was bought for their second team, but was still pretty expensive, I remember AIK representatives talking about one of the biggest transfer fee's in their club history. I did not even thing he was among the top 10 strikers in the league, but maybe I watched him in a bad day!
