Shimizu S Pulse striker Thiago Santos Santana is reportedly being "tracked" by Celtic this month as the club ramp up their search for a successor to Giorgios Giakoumakis.

The towering Greek frontman is moving closer to the Parkhead exit door with reports suggesting he is set to jet out to Japan to undergo a medical before penning a bumper contract with Urawa Red Diamonds, while Sampdoria also hold an interest in the 28-year-old after contract talks with Celtic stalled. Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors star Cho Gue-sunghad been expected to arrive in the Scottish Premiership but a deal now appears to be off, the the South Korea cap set to remain in the K-League.

Japanese outlet Sponichi report that Brazilian Santana is next on Ange Postecoglou's wishlist this month, who finished top scorer in the J-League last term. The 29-year-old made the move to Japan after having spent four seasons in Portugal with Setubal and Santa Clara

Mark Lawwell must have had an abundance of talent in his note book when he up and left Man City. Just seems we continually go back to the J-League. It's worked out well for us, obviously, but it just seems weird that we don't have any other targets from other places. First target? Failed. Ok, Ange. Who do you know from Japan seems to be where it is at the minute.

What's 'linked' got to do with anything? People will throw our names about left right and centre. It doesn't mean we have any real links to them.

My point is it seems we are becoming over reliant on one managers knowledge of one particular league. If we signed Santana and Suzuki, that would be 4 of the 5 players this window signed from the J-League. Again, I'm asking about the scouting department as a whole. It seems we've went all in on Cho and instead of looking at the second and third options we have on the list, we go back and ask Ange who he knows in the J-League.

Genuine links. Not paper talk. Genuine interest and links. They're completely different things.

Of course. I think there are more genuine news outlets, though.

For example, if we were getting linked with someone from Sweden by Football Insider, we all know it's a lot of pish.

If a news outlet in Japan breaks a story about someone coming here, there's more of a chance of it happening because they're far more reliable.

 

Yeah. Ange operates heavily in that market, so this rumor should and will be treated as semi-serious at least. Every manager has a geographic area he's familiar with. Our scouts scoured France during Rodgers' era. Now, we are hardly linked with any French players at all. I suppose this is how things go.

It's a well known fact that every news about a transfer we have made from J-League has been broken by a Japanese media outlet first. Completely different sort of media out there. They won't make up * for the sake of it like some * in the papers will over here.

 

There's more sources regarding the Polish striker than there us the Japanese based players. Anybody that thinks Ange and Celtic are ONLY looking at one league needs their heads checked, we wouldn't be successful if we did. Wake up

I asked a question. Are we looking at other areas? It seemed we put all our eggs in the Cho basket and when we don't get him, we go back to Ange and ask if he knows of anyone else. I then said that Mark Lawwell should have an unbelievable amount of knowledge after his time with the city group and we still seem to be heavily reliant on one league in particular.

Top scorer in the league for a relegated team and made team of the year. He's obviously got something about him.

Him and Shuto Machino were meant to be the stand out strikers last season without much between them and the latter was obviously seen as being good enough he got taken to the World Cup over Kyogo.

Interesting one but lets wait and see...
