The Death of John Thomson
A young man came from the Kingdom of Fife,
22 years, he lived his life,
From Cardenden he came to Glasgow,
A keeper brave, a young man so bold.

With Glasgow Celtic, he made his fame
Leaving the miners pits for the football game,
Between the goal post’ he became a hero,
Playing for Celtic, he gave his soul.

The Celtic crossed the Clyde to play at Ibrox
Were a crowd of 80,000 would witness
The greatest tragedy in Celtic’s history
When John Thomson’s life was taken away.

The Old Firm clash on the 5th of September,
The historians of football will always remember,
When * himself must have shed a tear
As he watched Thomson’s dive, end his career.

Down the right wing, Glasgow Rangers went forward
Encouraged by the Rangers supporters,
A crossed ball went to the feet of Sam English
And as John dived headlong, it was then they clashed.

On the ground, young John lay unconscious
As the Ibrox crowd stood in silence,
Stretchered from a blood, stained pitch
He never wore again a Celtic strip.

20,000 stood at Queen Street station
As his body was taken home by train,
The road to Cardenden was lined by mourners
Who said farewell to a young brave Celtic keeper.
