Alright lads, need a bit of a brainstorm session in here. Been asked to choose a broad subject area for my dissertation (History and Politics student). I chose Modern Irish History.

Now the problem I have is that I need to narrow it down drastically to a specific subject/issue. Any suggestions of topics, issues or general notions of interest to do with (but not necessarily restricted to) the early 20th Century or the Troubles would be alot of help. I cannot for the life of me narrow myself down theres just too much I'd like to focus on :56:

    Cheers :50:

We had to do coursework about Irish history this year from 1798-1922. I found the 1798 Rising and the 1801 Act of Union the most interesting. :50:

You could make a dissertation about who was pro and against the Act of Union (if 1801 is considered part of modern history) and why. That might lead to surprising results.

Other interesting thing is the link the provo's tried to make between the PIRA and the First Dail.

Interesting shout bud. :50: I'm just looking for ideas just now, but I'd need to make sure there was enough literature on the subject to be able to write substantially about it as well as having an original approach :50:

I am not sure how big your dissertation will be, but if less than 50 pages, I would focus on a very particular issue. Already lots of books that go into detail about these things, just a summary of these books is not very interesting of course.

It'll be around 12,000 words I think mate :50: As long as there is literature and other sources it would be possible. Of course, summarising the books would not be allowed, I'd have to make an original point as well.

What did you get in 5th/6th year (if you don't mind me asking) to get in? Hopefully doing History at uni.

He's doing the same course as me. Entry requirements last year were BBBC from 5th year or BBBB from 5th and 6th year

Finished reading Armed Struggle some while ago. :50:

Currently reading in The Green Flag by Robert Kee. Heavy stuff, pretty detailed and I thought it is quite interesting if you are interested in Irish history before 1916.

The entry requirements were BBBC when I applied. Never really got the finger out at school but got in GCU no bother. Overall results from S5 & S6 were; ABBBCC. Also a C for Int 2 Maths (unbelievably pish at that):50:

Cheers guys. I'm hoping for ABBB this year, but that's me being extremely optimistic :56: ACCC is more likely lol.

That's on my wishlist on Amazon :50:

I was also thinking of something centering on the 1921/22 treaty and the opposing views on it. Anyone interested in that should go on Google Books and read Free State or Republic?.

Glasgows my first choice but they want AAAB in 5th year haha. Calley is second and sounds a lot easier to get into.

I agree. 'laid back' is a good way to describe GCU :icon_mrgreen:
