Calmac was 21 on loan at County but I would definitely loan him to someone like Hibs. Porteous away, Rocky has a broken leg… He’ll play the rest of the season there.

Aye he was a bit older...so he was..

100%. Be much more exposure playing regularly in our league than league 1..

Would make sense as he needs the game time but would also leave us a bit light unless Ange is confident of Lawal stepping up when needed.

Agree development wise not the best move. However, a loan with no set fee puts him in the shop window.

A decent 6 months down there and you could end up with wealthy championship clubs that don't make it up making decent offers for him.

We're not gonna let him go unless another CB is brought in.

With Jenz away, can't see us loaning Welsh, unless Lawal could make the step up if required..

Happy to see him go for his own developement. We have ample cover there in Johnson, Iwata and Lawal for 4th CB.

No concerns about cover if we loan Welsh out. Iwata is a very capable centre back.

So he's interested in a loan to Sheffield Wednesday. Surely if this is sanctioned we'd have another CB lined up for a loan. Only takes an injury to CCV or Starfelt, or both as both have already been injured this season, and we'd only have Yuki as a recognised CB.

One countermeasure is to play Kobayashi and Iwata frequently, so as to reduce the physical strain on CCV and Starfelt.

It’s a tough one for Welsh and us, our main threat isn’t burnout for CCV and Starfelt it would be injury that would cause an issue.

From now until the end of the season we will only have a maximum of 3 midweek games and one of them is this week. One on the 8th of March (I think) due to the League cup final and the other will be in May post split. So workload shouldn’t come into it. Other than that we will have at least 6 days between games.

By the end of this week there will only be 13 league games, one cup final and up to 4 Scottish Cup games spread out across 4 months.

I would be concerned though from an injury perspective are recall options still allowed?

In the 10 games we have played post world cup ccv Starfelt and Kobayashi are the only three players to have feature at cb on heavy pitches in backed up games. We have additional cover with iwata lawal etoo.. let Welsh off on loan to gauge what he's at and we don't need anything in to replace him

Sheffield Wednesday dealt transfer blow as big decision made on Celtic defender
Sheffield Wednesday are set to miss out on the signing of Celtic defender, Stephen Welsh, after a decision was taken by Celtic on his future.

The Star reported last night that the Owls were in pursuit of the Bhoys defender, with Darren Moore looking at extra defensive options going into the second half of the campaign.

It’s understood that Welsh was open to making the switch to Hillsborough if the two clubs can agree terms, however Celtic aren’t flush for central defenders and we reported that they were reticent to let him leave.

Now though, with the transfer deadline rapidly approaching, we understand that Celtic have made the decision that he will not be leaving on loan – and will be part of their squad for the rest of the season as they chase a treble

Makes sense given Jentz was allowed to leave. We need 4 senior center backs available.

Dundee United have seen an ambitious move for Celtic defender Stephen Welsh rejected by the champions.

The 23-year-old saw his opportunities limited during the first half of the campaign due to the form of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Carl Starfelt and Moritz Jenz.

Although Jenz returned to parent club Lorient – before moving to Schalke – defender Yuki Kobayashi has now arrived in Glasgow, making Welsh’s task no less onerous.

Welsh has been restricted to six appearances this season and did not even make the match-day squad for Sunday’s 2-0 victory at Tannadice

And Courier Sport understands that the Tangerines made a loan move for the ex-Scotland U21 defender as they seek to strengthen their backline prior to midnight

However, Celtic kicked out the offer.

Sheffield Wednesday have also been credited with an interest in the youngster.

Club made a sensible decision, but I feel for Welsh. He'd have been best served getting game time.

Shoulda loaned him to Dundee United, kept him up close but in a team that is used to constantly defending. Wrong call to keep him on the bench here, we coulda had lawal or Murray for that
