CELTIC are delighted to announce that Shaun Maloney has returned to the club, taking up a role as a development coach with the Under-20s. The 34-year-old, who previously enjoyed two playing spells with the Hoops, has now finished his career as a player, and will begin coaching with the U20s.

Shaun, a graduate of the Celtic Youth Academy, spent seven years at Celtic between 2000 and ’07 before moving down south to join Aston Villa. He returned to Paradise in 2008 and spent three further years with the Hoops.

In total he made 215 appearances for Celtic, scoring 52 goals and winning five league titles, five Scottish Cups and three League Cups. He gained 47 caps for Scotland, while he also enjoyed spells with Wigan Athletic, Chicago Fire and Hull City.

Everyone at Celtic welcomes Shaun back to the club and wishes him every success in his new coaching role.

JK on Shaun Maloney: "We're happy to bring him on board. He'll bring a lot; professionalism, personality and a wealth of experience."

JK: "He's had spells in England and the US, an FA Cup winner. He's someone for the younger players to look up to

JK: "He's a player who has studied the game. He's an example for the young players and gives us another voice they can relate to."

JK: "Shaun is a good friend of mine. He's been through the process and understands the pressures and transitions for young players."

Nah. He was at training once or twice speaking with Rodgers and there were rumours that he'd join as a coach but it never happened.

It's * typical of our board this is. :47:

We're crying out for the return of a former winger, and the club go for the cheap option of bringing back Shaun Maloney over Paddy Roberts! :38:

I only remember him insisting on him taking them and always missing! Can think of 1 time ever he scored. Remember in Nakamura's last ever game at Celtic Park, we had a freekick about 20 yards out in the last minute. Crowd buzzed as Naka stood over it, but Maloney insisted on taking it as it was set up for a right footer. Curled is straight into the keeper's arms and ref blew the whistle. Never forgave him for it!!

But other than that, always liked Maloney. Seems more intelligent than a lot of players.

Hopefully a good move this. Still young enough to be playing at a high level. Know's the club..

Massive amount of experience. Clever, skillful player who played the way Rodgers likes us to play. Not your typical Scottish forward. Should rub off well on the likes of Johnston and our more flair player's for sure as well..

Is he taking charge of the medical/physio team? He must be an expert by now you'd think.

I remember his debut v the huns at the shitpit clear as day. Larsson scored his 50th goal. Maloney could of been a * and tapped it in but he let it run.

    Hopefully he has an impact.
