and when we were in the champions league and making big money on player transfers we still wouldn't have been spending the kind of money to buy Duffy never mind having forked out £10m already. Our method of spending money defies any logic.

The problem won't be the money to sign Duffy, it will be the wages. We'll only get Duffy if he actually wants to give up the money to do it.

Probably the same with Forster, if we could pay guys £60k a week like Brighton and Crystal Palace we'd have signed players like Duffy and Forster but those guys even if they do want to come here need to be willing to half their wage. It's the wages that are a problem.

We arent guarenteed enough income to pay EPL wages. Teams like Brighton can afford wagebills of double ours.

Have you seen some of the fees and wages down there? You are * mental if you think even a surplus Brighton player isn’t a big ask.

Even then, he’s not surplus. He’s just fell down the pecking order. They would still use him in the squad. He’ll be pushing £40k a week

Not going to argue with any of that in terms of wages as I am sure most of us would not half ours to move jobs.

The thing I don’t get is we all know EPL and even some teams in the Championship pay crazy money and demand big fees so why do we target those markets?

There are plenty other leagues out there with talent in them. Just because we have bought dross like Amido Balde, Bayo and Boli amongst others doesn’t mean there aren’t good players in Slovakia, Austria, Scandinavian leagues, other Dutch teams out with PSV and Ajax, France, Switzerland, Israel etc.

Why do we insist on continuously going to England where fees and wages are massively inflated?

We've slacked that far behind that some of they Leagues have caught up and some have over taken ours in terms of quality and competitiveness , i say that as a club and country. really don't know why in particular we dont scour scandinavia... the netherlands and italian youth set ups are full of Scandinavians nowadays, think our last 2 from there were Ajer and Johansen.... and Bangura but...

We also bought Erik from Denmark, there seems to be a lot of good talent there.

Agreed our standing in Europe has dropped but we are still a decent step towards the big bucks EPL and have a track record of getting good players there. What will become an issue is if we keep signing boys and not playing them as that’s sure to put people off.

Brighton are ready to let Celtic take Shane Duffy on the ‘never-never’ if it helps the Irishman get a move to the club he supported as a boy.

The Hoops want to bring the 28-year-old north to bolster a squad whose defensive frailties were exposed in the Champions League exit to Ferencvaros.

Seemingly surplus to requirements under Graham Potter’s management at the Amex, Duffy is likewise keen on the idea.

Yet while the English Premier League club won’t oppose his departure, they are determined to get market value.

West Ham and West Brom are both also interested, with the former, in particular, not put off by the £5-million asking price.

That’s viewed as steep by Celtic, especially at a time when they have just missed out on a potential £30m-plus windfall for reaching the Champions League group stages.

They would prefer to take the Republic of Ireland international on a year’s loan, with a chunk of his wages being picked up by Brighton.

The Seagulls, owned by sports better and former professional poker player, Tony Bloom, are fine with that – provided they receive a £2m loan fee for doing it!

It is understood, though, that in a bid to move the situation on, they have suggested a compromise, which would see Celtic sign the player permanently, but pay for him in four annual payments of £1.25m.

They worked a similar arrangement to allow boyhood Rangers fan, Jamie Murphy, to move to Ibrox.

With Duffy’s contract having another three years to run, Brighton stand to potentially save millions on his £40,000-a-week wages.

Brighton have Ben White returning from a successful loan at Leeds United.

The Elland Road club have tried repeatedly to make it a permanent £25m transfer, but been rebuffed each time.

The Hoops would potentially still have some work to do to get Duffy to agree to terms they could live with.

I don't think the £5m is the issue. More likely his wage.

Meanwhile our season is well under way, as all this drags on we're still desperate for a CB, maybe even 2. :31:

I dont think for one minute its the 5 million fee that's causing the problem either it'll be the wages.

Tbh I don't get the excitement in signing him, sure we need a no * about CB but at 5 million and wages of upwards of 30k I just think we could get better value outwith shopping in the epl.

I agree. Kipre from Wigan would be a good addition for the squad. Will boss it in league. 900k. Maybe 15k a week max. We've missed out on some real bargains this summer
