AIK sporting director Bjorn Wesstrom believes his side aren't any closer to agreeing a deal for impending free agent Mikael Lustig

The Celtic defender is free to talk to other clubs with his Parkhead deal set to expire in the summer but the Swedish side are playing the waiting game.

Lustig is being chased by AIK and he could depart Parkhead after seven-and-a-half years with the Premiership champions.

But his Celtic career isn't dead in the water and interim boss Neil Lennon could hold the key to the right-back's future.

Brendan Rodgers brought in Jermey Toljan in January but Lustig has been reinstated to the starting XI and could earn a new deal if the Irishman is offered the Celtic job on a permanent basis.

Celtic face a significant summer rebuild and a one-year extension for the long-serving star isn't off the table.

But Wesstrom remains hopeful he can convince Lustig that a return to his homeland would be the right move.

Wesstrom told Studio AIK." I have talked to Mikael Lustig but we are not so close right now.

If it is close then you discuss details and plans, and you talk to the coach, and we are not there yet

What he needs to decide first and foremost is whether he should remain at Celtic or not, and I understand that they have a job to do, Celtic and himself.

"When they have decided on that future, then we will think about how our interest is."

Most active player in our attacks, especially first half. He was direct, and tried his best to either score or provide service.

Correct but there comes a time when that isn’t enough. No shame in that

Anyone with a bit of pace or trickery and he's done, get's away with it mostly because most teams we play in our league sit deep and defend for the full 90. I really don't want to be going into European qualifiers with Izaguirre and Lustig as fullbacks fs. And now for the 3rd or 4th season running we will be in the market for a new RB, something that has become a problem ever since Matthews left for peanuts down south and left us with no one to compete with him.

Done with hating on him because it isn't his fault for Lee Congerton not finding a suitable replacement, but going into Champions League qualifiers and knockout European competition with him in the starting xi is suicidal.
