    This needs its own thread.

Wasn’t sure how to pose the question, who is better, who do you prefer, who would you pump etc?

But yeah, honours, accolades, goals and assists aside, who is the better footballer?

Knock yourselves the * out :50:

I love Ronaldo and don’t particularly like Messi.

But I concede that Messi is the better footballer and have voted accordingly

    I’d rather watch Ronaldo though.

Messi creates his own magic, tears teams wide open by himself, gets the * kicked out of him and carries on.

Ronaldo is dependant on a wealth of world class players playing the ball to him or he throws a strop, throws himself on the floor whenever possible.

Any particular reason? I'm always surprised when people say they prefer Ronaldo, unless they are United/Madrid fans.

But regarding the topic, Messi without a doubt imo.

Ronaldo is an incredible goalscorer and used to be a joy to watch, but Messi for me is the ultimate football player. Exceptional in everything he does and looks effortless.

Plus Ronaldo is * a free kicks, all that * drama and stance because he scored one before Jesus was born.

His celebration is embarrassing as well.

At this moment in time? Think Ronaldo just edges it.

Like I said in the other thread though, I fully expect once both men have hung up their boots for Messi to greatly receive the accolade as the Greatest Football Player Ever.

I’m a bit of a Ronaldo fanboy if I’m honest. I like the flashness and admire his athleticism. I prefer pace and thunderbolt goals than mazy runs and side foot finishes. Thoroughly enjoy documentaries about him and thought his ‘film’ was great. Yes, he’s arrogant, but I also get the impression he is really good with fans and have seen countless examples of this.

Messi just seems to be a huffy *. Perhaps he’s just more private and reserved of course.

    Fair play.

I can't stand the guy on the pitch, tbh. Wants everything to be all about him and is greedy as *. His quotes the other day after winning the Ballon d'Or were an absolute riddy. If he was made of chocolate he'd gobble himself up.

Off the pitch he seems like a very decent guy. Does a lot for charity and by all accounts is a great family man.

Ronaldo is a goal machine, Messi is a pure footballer with all the skills in his locker, the greatest passer of a ball the game has ever seen, the best dribbler there has ever been, a free kick expert and most importantly a team player.

Future generations will look back in awe and admiration at the genius that is Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo to his credit has great hair.

What would you expect someone to say after winning a trophy that states they've been voted the best fitba player in the world?

    "Eh, cheers.".

Mate there's a big difference between saying "cheers" and this...

"I'm the best player in history, in the good moments and the bad ones," he told France Football. "I respect everyone's preferences, but I've never seen anyone better than me. I have always thought that. No footballer can do the things I can. There's no player more complete than me.

Like I said, he can't get enough of himself. He'd get more respect from a lot of people if he was a bit more humble and in touch with reality.

    I get that.

Thing is though, he's pretty much earned the right to think he's the greatest player on earth, regardless of whether I think he is or not. And regardless of whether or not I think the self-praise deserves a STFU slap.

This world cup is huge for both. If Messi and Argentina have another stinker, and Ronaldo can inspire Portugal to reach the later stages then i cant seperate them.

Messi and Argentina reached the final last time to be fair, beaten purely by a magical goal from Gotze well into extra-time. If Higuain had his shooting boots on that day and scored the chance that fell to him then Messi would have been world champion and perhaps the debate would have already been put to bed.

As much as I'd love it to happen, I don't think even Messi is capable of dragging Argentina to the victory this time. France, Germany, Spain and Brazil all have far stronger squads.

Leo Messi is the best footballer I have ever seen.

No bias, no prejudice, nothing against any of the others that are in the debate. *, he’s scored a bucketload of goals against my team that the others haven’t.

He’s just the greatest, there’s never been anyone like him and our generation will never witness anyone like him.

Ronaldo deserves to be mentioned in the GOAT debate though, his prolonged period of scoring at the highest level sees to that.
