If you were wondering whatever happened to that Sons of Anarchy spinoff Mayans MC, well, it is indeed still happening. At the TV Critics Press Tour today, FX announced that they have picked up the Kurt Sutter series for a full season. The road has been rough for Mayans MC, though. About six months ago, the pilot was reshot and the cast completely replaced. Emilio Rivera, who was originally set to star (as a connection to Sons of Anarchy), was replaced by JD Pardo. Edward James Olmos has stayed with the series, but other changes have also taken place behind the scenes, with creator Kurt Sutter stepping away from directing the series, and instead keeping just a screenwriter credit. (The pilot was directed by Noberto Barba).

The 10-episodes first season is set to premiere later this year, though with no exact date as of yet. It will be “set in a post Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes, fresh out of prison, is a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexi border. Now EZ must carve out his new outlaw identity in a town where he once was the golden boy who had the American Dream within his grasp,” according to a press release.

Nick Grad, one of the co-Presidents of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, said of the series,

“Kurt Sutter is a master storyteller and Mayans MC has the raw energy and intensity that are hallmarks of his signature style. Thanks to Kurt, co-creator Elgin James and this amazing cast, Mayans MC builds on the legacy of Sons of Anarchy, taking it in a thrilling new direction that we can’t wait for the world to see.”


FX’s TV landscape has changed a lot since Sons of Anarchy first premiered in 2008, and it makes sense that the network would want to take its time to make sure Mayans MC works for them now. Even late into its run though, Sons of Anarchy was a popular series, and a continuing story of that world should be an interesting one, especially if if can mirror the quality of SOA‘s early seasons.

Mayans MC will also star Sarah Bolger, Clayton Cardenas, Richard Cabral, Michael Irby, Raoul Trujillo, Antonio Jaramillo and Carla Baratta.

Might give the first episode a go. SoA was hit and miss so I don’t have high expectations for this.

Agree with Mark. I’d rather have seen a prequel.

 

Yep, definitely would have preferred a series about the First 9.

Will be watching this though. At least 3 series' of SOA were absolutely outstanding.

 

As already said would much rather a prequel.

The mayans never struck me as particularly interesting at all.

 

First 2 episode's on bbc2 tonight.

 

Not remotely as good as Sons but was a half decent watch.

Hopefully season 2 is better as it's set up quite well now.

 

So stumbled upon a clip of this.

I had no idea it was up and running.

The clip was SAMCRO mediating a beef between the Mayans and the Native American biker gang ( can't remember the name)

It was * painful, and that was with Chibs starring

Just started this yesterday, about halfway through 1st series, it's pretty decent so far. Not the best but not pure *, defos watchable.

 

What's it on?

 

I tried once and immediately didn’t like it. I will try again on your recommendation. I loved Sons of Anarchy so no reason I shouldn’t like this.

Maybe I was too quick to compare the two.

 

It's hard to separate the two as they'll always get compared, mainly due to SoA. If you watch it with a clear slate it's really good, going in expecting a samcro clone you'll be disappointed.

What I love about Mayans is the character stories and progression.

I'm just hoping that the rumours are true about more from SoA or another spinoff. Not enough decent series out there these days.

 

Honestly couldn’t disagree more about series’ just now. At the moment I’m waiting on the next episode of Godfather of Harlem, The Last of Us, Mandalorian and something else that escapes me. Some great TV just now.

 

The only one I've no interest there is Last of Us, Mrs loved the game so watches it. Oh don't get me wrong there are some good series out there just scattered all over the place. The Expanse, Valhalla, Peeky Blinders etc all come to an end. Been watching Animal Kingdom (like watching GTA) and too many western series started with one continued to an obsetion lol

 

Last of Us is good.

Funnily enough I didn’t like the game didn’t finish it so no idea how the show ends, don’t usually like “zombie” shows. This is worth watching though.
