I think holm is better on the ball than him and better at pressing than him also has a better eye for a pass. We haven’t seen as much of holm after that card last season but will see more this season I reckon and i think you’ll notice then he’s better once you see more of him. He also looked quite good pre season. I said iwata is possibly better not definitely but he is a different style of player. And I hear are our back ups aswell btw so if McCowan is gonna be an improvement by how much? And how often will he play? Also holm is younger and has higher potential.
What has McCowan done to earn a move here and game time ahead of say holm?
I just think with more game time we will see much more from the likes of holm or say Bernardo than we would from mccowan

I'd actually trust McCowan and Bernardo to replace Hatate and O'Riley for a run of games and for us not to struggle too much or even be worried as they are like for like styles of player with similar qualities and physicality and stuff.

Not like if it was Holm and Iwata playing you'd be thinking who's going to create or score or Turnbull also before you'd be thinking we're lopsided and who's going to cover him with the lack of legs and mobility.

People forget Aaron Mooy was quality and he was playing for St Mirren at 20-22 and then went back to Australia from 22-26, sometimes it happens.

Just cause you are 26 doesn't mean you have no potential it's not a video game, Larsson probably got better every year from 26-31.

People would probably have snubbed Paul Lambert when he was 27 at Motherwell "hes no potential". When Dortmund signed him he was 27 with 7 Scotland caps. Then 1 year later he is a messiah arriving from Dortmund now that people thought he was good from 1 season at a better team.

I do think we need another midfielder outside of O'Riley leaving

We'd Ideally have a midfield of O'Riley/New signing, Hatate/Bernardo and McGregor/New signing and loaning Holm out.

I'd prefer our other midfielder to be a CDM to be fair, but McCowan is a good wee player.

Holm has a better eye for a pass and is better at pressing? I’m not so sure about that. I seem to remember him getting hooked at 60 mins anytime he started as he was completely anonymous.

McCowan has been a standout for a much lesser team over a long period of time. I’d be much more confident with him playing 10 games in the team when needed in the league rather than Holm, Iwata or Kwon.

He’s shown he has the technical ability, and has the character and mental attributes not to shrink if thrown in at hostile away grounds.

I’m in danger of making him sound like Modric here the way I’m banging on about him, but I think he’d be a great rotation option.

Same, I don't mind Iwata coming on to see out games, for me he's a decent allrounder and quite combative but I wouldn't be starting him for us. He isn't really suited to replacing any of our midfielders unless we are seeing out a game from a winning point.

    Holm needs to prove himself.

Even in a good squad like when we had Brown, McGregor, Armstrong, Rogic or Wanyama, Brown, Ledley, Kayal, Commons theres probably always room for someone like McCowan in the squad, a cheaper player on lower wages and like a 4th choice centre-mid who you'd trust to do well when playing and be able to add the same type of thing the starting guys give you while not losing a lot either.

When you think of the amount Holm, Kelly and Iwata played last season or before Bitton, McCarthy, Turnbull and even on and on back to Kouassi, Henderson, Musonda theres always midfielders who get games who don't really fit in or do a lot where a guy like this would have done a job.

Very good wee player but at 26 about to turn 27 I can’t see us going after him, not in the ‘club model’.

Fair enough mate tbh. I do think he is a good player but right now and he would be a good option off the bench but I don’t think he’s needed. And yeah I think holm definitely has a better eye for a pass McCowan does press well too in fairness to him but I like what I see from holm he picks up positions very well and last season he was unfortunate to not see much time after that red card. Was a tough season for Rodgers to try give him minutes too in fairness due to being under the cosh and having other midfielders like bernardo and Iwata coming in and doing well. I think with more game time this season holm will flourish and say if McCowan came in he wouldn’t see much time either. There’s atleast 4 cms ahead of him currently and I think personally holm will be ahead too

Wouldn't be upset if we signed him or not but I think he would do well for us. I think collectively this place can overlook Scottish players, if he was Belgian and played for Antwerp I think a fair few more would be interested in signing him, especially at the £1m mark

Hayes was a great squad player for the left side, but I can’t see McCowan getting much game time for us. I think he’d be a great squad player but I can’t see it. Imagine we sell O’Reilly and bring in McCowan, there’d be a riot :giggle1:

Good player, just don't think he'd improve the team so don't sign him and bench him. Let the boy stay and play where he is. Helps keep the league competitive.

If we are to sign him I would like to buy him and loan him back to Dundee.
