Japhet Matondo

Celtic have registered an interest in Cardiff City's Japhet Matondo.

The young winger has impressed in Wales and has landed on the Hoops' radar.


Celts recently lost Ben Doak to Liverpool but Football Scotland understands Matondo could be considered a replacement for the young Scot's talents in the Parkhead academy




Matondo, 16, has already featured for Cardiff's under-23s side and has played on the international scene for Wales at under-17s level.

He can play left-wing as well as on the other flank.

Celtic would benefit from the cross border compensation fee rule which would mean they would only have to stump up around £130k for the teenager.




Football Scotland also understands Leeds United are keeping tabs on the player though his services would cost substantially more given the market and the fact that it would not be training compensation.

It is believed his future could be mapped in within the next week or two.




Matondo would likely begin life in the B team playing in the Lowland League but, should he show the same potential Doak showed, could well be in amongst the first-team down the line.

It would not be the first time the Glasgow giants have taken advantage of the cross border compensation rule, either.




Moussa Dembele cost a pittance from Fulham back in 2016.

Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide were also signed under the same market plan.

 

Had so much potential as a kid at City..
