With Christie gone its more important than ever McCarthy gets himself fit and in the team. We are going to need his dig in midfield and it should allow McGregor to move into the more advanced positions that Christie had been occupying.

It was claimed he was a close contact, not that he had it, then tested negative but was told to stay away from the squad as a precaution.

But hopefully the time training with the squad during the international break will do him good as he has offered us nothing since he came in so far.

Have to remember the lad didn’t have a preseason. Was keeping himself physically fit, sure, but that’s obviously hugely different from team training and match sharpness.

I’ve every faith he’ll come good. Very early days yet.

Hopefully he’s used break to train with squad and get fit, only games will get him fully up to speed though.Pivotal that he stays fit for selection to help out in our most weakened area in the middle.

Hopefully he is ready by next weekends game to at least get some more game time off the bench and start to get closer to being fully match ready and fit.

Anyone that is shocked by him being injured hasn't been paying attention to the lads career

For all the hassle he got by sticking to his guns and playing for Ireland he has done nothing in his international career.Absolutely nothing

He has pulled out of more squads than he has been a part of

This is his 16th season as a senior pro and the lad doesn't have any career highlights that I can think of

I desperately wanted him to do well but I've always thought this is how it's going to be with him

He wasn’t injured though, he had to sit games out due to being a close contact.

I would say starting and playing a big role in one if the biggest shocks in FA Cup Final history when Wigan beat Manchester City in 2013 would qualify as a career highlight. International wise I would say the 2016 European Championship Qualifying campaign certainly was a highlight and one McCarthy contributed a lot to. He started 7 of the 10 qualifying matches including the famous 1-0 victory over then World Champions Germany ( another career highlight I would think). He started both of the playoff matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina so I would say in particular the 2-0 second leg win qualifying Ireland for the 2016 Euro Finals would definitely qualify as a career highlight. Then started all 4 Ireland games at the Euro Finals including the famous 1-0 win over Italy so more career highlights there I would say.

Now there is no question since then he has had his career severely blighted by injury but to say he has no career highlights and done nothing playing for Ireland simply is not accurate.

TBH the only place i've seen this is on here. Not seen anything confirmed why he's out. If it wasn't injury, would he not have been training with the new guys as would have been over the isolation.

I could have put that a lot better

He hasn't been the star man we expected, nor has he ever been our stand out player.Plenty of less heralded players have made a more significant impact with Ireland than he has
