£18m * off. We are not paying that for 1 player, we never spend that in an entire season on bringing new players. He will also have the added World Cup player tax that happens every 4 years. It sounds like some * picked a country out of 32 from a hat, then picked a player a random to link with Celtic.
I imagine Celtic have another £10m (the very max) to spend in this window if they do not sell anybody else, I wouldn't want that spent on another midfielder. Spend that on a couple of defenders.

    £18m :56:

This might be an unpopular opinion, but we really shouldn’t be spending that kind of money on a player.

when you can only list 1 player in our team:57:. Oh wait Marvin Compper? Lee Congerton has a poor track record and it doesn't look like it's going to change. Sunderland and Hamburg both got relegated under him when he was the sporting director

this price of 18 million pounds cant in any way be real, Neymar left Santos for almost that much. But still, I hope we could sign that guy, he is quite good. Dont think we will as this is too imaginative and ambitious for our board

As I seen wrote somewhere up the page potentially in this thread:

Our business model has been bringing players in at 1-3million and selling them on at a profit, usually within 2-3 year period depending if they have signed another contract etc.

And we have had good success with this in a number of cases.

But to do anything in europe we need to change this, and with brendan here he’s the man to oversee this.

We should be signing 4 players a year max between both windows between the 5-10million mark while still continuing the model of selling on for profits.

But instead off selling for 8-13million we would then be selling for 15-25million with the development under Brendan and the exposure to the champions league and winning trophies domestically.

Therefore the quality essentially among the squad goes up and the players coming through the ranks will only improve training and playing regularly with better standard off players.

I think we're striving to get there but still a way off..

Portuguese side's like Benfica and Porto spend big doe and if 1 or 2 fail, it doesn't hurt them too much..

Ajax I think have spent 40 odd million already this window and 2 18 mill transfers..

2 out of 3 of them have the best academies in Europe so are well ahead of us..

If we were to spend 10 mill on a flop, it would really hurt us..

We definitely are getting there in terms of what we're starting to get for transfers and how even the media and Europe value our best player's. It will benefit us in year's to come..

KT youth graduate. 25 mill odd..
Dembele half a mill. 25/30 mill..

That's realistically the kinda number's we'll eventually get for half a mill. 50 odd mill profit..

That's where we are in the ladder. Bringing through and buying gems and making big profits off of them. Then going again..

I agree we are getting there, but as you sayone thing to note is that we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves.

To date, we’ve only managed to get £12ish million for a player and that player proved to be the most expensive defender ever and a UCL finalist.

Tierney and Dembele’s values mean nothing until someone actually makes a concrete offer. Until then, it’s all rumour and speculation what we would get for them.

Hamburg only got relegated this year when he was at Celtic. Also the year he left Sunderland they did not get relegated

sorry thought the bundesliga had the same system as the epl (3 go down, 3 go up). Instead his first season they finished 15th the next year they finished 7th (very good) then 16th and had to play off to stay up and they won on away goals. Then they finished 16th again in 2014-15 season and won again in the relegation play off with a heap of * players that he signed- he wasn't at the club that season but he was part of players that Hamburg were left with. Hamburg underachieved 3/4 seasons and were in a relegation battle most years he was there.

In regards to Sunderland he signed a bunch of crap, in fairness to him management higher up in the club were just as bad. Jozy Altidore was meant to be a replacement for Defoe when he knew previous that Altidore had failed in england (28 games for Hull 1 goal) yet went ahead with it anyway. 42 games later for the club he had scored 1 goal :56:. Pretty sure he was there when Sunderland were relegated or was he already sacked by the club and he claimed to leave?

    Good read- https://rokerreport.sbnation.com/2016/7/4/12093504/congerton-flawed-or-fraud

That's part of the problem, we aren't playing a British style of football, so bringing in players that know the British game isn't necessarily an advantage. Also why compare with Mexicans? Mexico's not in South America, unlike Brazil.
It's all a bit academic anyway as this signing is never happening.

Unless it is Messi himself we are not spending 18 million on any player.
